Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

As of the latest directive received this afternoon, all before and after school programs are suspended until April 12 or until further notice.  This means no chess practices or events for the next few weeks, including the upcoming playoffs and championships.  I am sorry that we must take these measures, but I hope that everyone understands and remains patient.  I will attempt to set up a tournament on chesskid.com, but please encourage your child to keep their skills sharp.  But most importantly, stay safe and informed.  We will get through this.

If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact me at acgeisler@cps.edu.

Sincerely,
Mr. Geisler

Bateman Chess Team Newsletter

2/24/2020

Picture
Feb. 24, 2020

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

Congratulations to our players and grade-level teams for their recent tournament success!  At the last CCF tournament in January, the K-4 Novice team earned a 1st place trophy, while the K-6 Novice team also got an award with a 2nd place finish.  At the Greater Chicago Championships at the beginning of this month, the K-3 and K-9 Reserve teams both earned 1st place honors.  There were several individual awards as well.  This is great momentum for the upcoming championship season in March and April.
  • Before we get to March, however, we have a special Leap Day tournament on Feb. 29 hosted by the Chicago Chess Foundation at Nobel School.  See the details on the back, and please return the permission slip by next Tue. (2/25).
  • Please note that there will be one upcoming practice schedule change.  I will be out of the building on Mar. 3, so we are moving both the All-Stars and Club practices to Wed. Mar. 4.  Thank you for planning ahead and for your understanding.  The Mar./Apr. calendar of events has been updated.  Please see the attached schedule.
  • This week I presented a Chesskid Challenge to the students.  The goal is to login to their accounts at least once per day to work on their lessons and other practice features on the website (puzzles, videos, workouts, etc.).  They don’t need to stay on the site for long (10-15 min.), but I’m hoping this habit will give the Bateman players adequate time to build their skills outside of our practice sessions. Chesskid.com can be accessed from any device, including apps on phone.
  • Today is the early entry fee deadline for the K-12 Championships on Apr. 3-5 in Columbus, OH.  I will be confirming plans with any parents who expressed interest in participating in this event.  There is still the opportunity to participate, so if you have any interest, please contact me ASAP.
  • Although the IL State K-8 Championships are not until March, we have some early deadlines to keep in mind.  Thank you to those of you who turned in the interest forms sent home a couple weeks ago.  We will be using those to help build our roster and prepare for registration.  If you have any questions or concerns about the tournament, please let me know.
  • We are just about set to put in our apparel order.  Thank you for your patience as we have been working on a new design and ordering procedure.  Look for an ordering form next week for shirts, hoodies, and our newest addition: embroidered track jackets!
  • Remember: You can always keep up to date on Bateman’s chess activities on the website: http://bateman.cps.edu/bateman-chess.html or via our parent Facebook page (search Bateman Elementary Chess Team).
If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact me at acgeisler@cps.edu or (773)534-5055.

Sincerely, Mr. Geisler

Feb. 4, 2020

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

In order to prepare for some of the upcoming state and national chess events, I am requesting that parents complete the form below to indicate your interest and availability.  Please return the form by Fri. 2/7.  The most immediate priority is the IL State Championships in Schaumburg on Mar. 21-22.  The Chicago Chess Foundation is sponsoring some free entries for families who would otherwise not be able to afford the opportunity, which requires an application that I must complete by Feb. 9.
CPS is also offering to sponsor eight Bateman players for the K-6 National Elementary Championship in Nashville, TN on May 8-10.  This opportunity requires early registration and planning as an official field trip.
Lastly, the K-12 National Championship in Columbus, OH is scheduled for April 3-5.  There are already a few families planning to travel to this event, so the more the merrier!  Information for each of these events is available on the Bateman chess team website: http://bateman.cps.edu/bateman-chess.html

If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact me at acgeisler@cps.edu or (773)534-5055.
Sincerely,
Mr. Geisler

Jan. 9, 2020

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break!  Let’s get ready for a successful 2020 for the Bateman Chess Team!  Here are some updates as we look ahead:

  • Please remember that we are now in our new after-school practice schedule on Mondays and Tuesdays.  There are no more Thursday afternoon practices.  Every Bateman chess player is required to attend two practices per week, so if one of the afternoons is not available, please choose either Tue. or Thu. morning to attend the extra practice.  In addition, as we prepare for more competitions, I encourage players to get some extra practice outside of our scheduled practice times.  That can be on chesskid.com (gold memberships have been renewed!), coming to Free Chess Fridays, playing friends or family members with chess sets, or participating in other chess activities like the Northwest Side Chess Club (https://www.facebook.com/groups/nwsidechess/).
  • As a reminder, this Saturday’s CPS Kings & Queens tournament at Whitney Young allows for only limited entries.  I have contacted those players who have been offered an invitation to play.
  • Our next free CCF tournament is the following Saturday, Jan. 18 at Rickover Naval Academy.  The information is on the back of this letter and a permission slip has been included for that event.
  • Don’t forget that all of the different chess announcements, documents, and information are available on the Bateman Chess Team website.  You can also use the website to find any forms that may have gotten lost in those book bag black holes, as well as plan ahead for upcoming events.  Bookmark: http://bateman.cps.edu/chess-team.html
  • I am excited to announce that we have been awarded another CCF Pawns to Queens grant.  This will give us the opportunity to have an advanced instructor once a week.  International Master (IM) Arjun Vishnuvardhan will be coming to Bateman on Friday afternoons for the next 10 weeks to offer more advanced lessons.  All Intermediate and Advanced players are expected to attend, unless they have a conflicting activity.  All other Bateman chess team members are invited to attend.  This special program will begin next Fri. 1/17 at 3:30pm.
  • We have the Greater Chicago Championships in early February (2/1/2020), which is an excellent opportunity to play in a rated tournament.  Our school qualifies for free entries (which includes a free annual membership to the official US Chess).  A flyer for that event will also be sent home soon, but please plan ahead.
  • Chess March Madness is just around the bend, with city and state playoffs and championships!  All of the tournament dates and locations are on the complete Chess Team calendar on our website.
  • For the past seven years Bateman has had students represented at national tournaments.  After March, we have a couple of these events for you to consider: the National K-12 Championships in Columbus, OH (4/3-5), and the National Elementary (K-6) Championships in Nashville, TN (5/8-10).  We will begin planning for those events soon, so mark your calendar.
  • Students will be receiving an updated calendar that includes all of the practices and events from now until the end of March.  Please keep that schedule in a handy place to plan ahead.  You may also check the Bateman Chess Team website for any practice updates.
  • We are nearly finished in our new Chess Team track jackets.  Look for an update soon on ordering information.
If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact me at acgeisler@cps.edu or (773)534-5055.

Sincerely,

Bateman Chess All-Stars Newsletter

12/6/2019

Dec. 6, 2019

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

Congratulations to the players who participated in the recent tournaments.  We earned some team and individual awards, so we are once again off to a good start in our season.  As we close down 2019 and look ahead to 2020, there are some important announcements below and on the back of this letter:
  • Our next free CCF tournament is Sat. Dec. 14 at a new location: Taft High School.  Please see the details on the back of this letter, and the attached permission slip, which needs to be returned by next Thu. Dec. 12.
  • Please see the updated calendar that is being sent home with this letter (also available on the Bateman website: http://bateman.cps.edu/bateman-chess.html).
  • As you have heard, CPS has two make-up days scheduled for Jan. 2 and 3.  There are no chess practices scheduled for Thu. 1/2.  However, I will offer Free Chess Friday at 7:30am on 1/3 to welcome back the players.
  • We will be offering Bateman chess shirts in January.  I am also in talks with our vendor about the possibility of a track-style team jacket.  Before the break, I will be sending home an interest form if you are considering an order for a shirt or jacket.  More information will be on the form, but if you have any questions, let me know.
  • Sometimes flyers will be sent home for other chess events.  Some of these are rated tournaments that require entry fees, while others are free events offered by a variety of organizations like the Chicago Chess Center, the Knights Move Chess Club in Pilsen, among others.  Whenever the event is a team event that is open to all of our players, I will attach a permission slip.  Otherwise, the participation is optional.  As always, if you ever have any questions about any of the upcoming chess events, do not hesitate to contact me.  I encourage Bateman players to play in as many events as they want to, but unfortunately I cannot always make it to every activity.
  • There will be more tournaments in 2020, including some big state and national events.  Some dates to keep in mind in March and beyond include: CPS Playoffs (3/14), IL K-8 State Championships (3/20-22), CPS Championships (3/28), National K-12 Championships in Columbus, OH (4/3-5), and the National Elementary (K-6) Championships (5/8-10).  We will begin planning for the state and national events in January.  There is already some information available on the Chess Event Calendar on our team website.
  • Every Chess team member now has their Chesskid.com Gold membership.  Students should be using their accounts for additional practice and sharpening of their skills.  Family and homework should always come first, but the Chesskid memberships were paid for by school fundraising, and therefore should be used when possible.
  • For those of you on Facebook, please check out the Bateman Chess Team page.  We offer updates and links to events and other chess news.

Thank you for involving your child in this program.  If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact me at acgeisler@cps.edu or (773)534-5055.

Sincerely,
Mr. Geisler

Dec. 12.
  • Due to my own grad school schedule changing in January, we have to adjust our afternoon practice schedule.  Beginning the week of Jan. 6, we will no longer have practices on Thursdays, but on Tuesdays instead.  Please see the updated calendar that is being sent home with this letter.  I’m sorry for the inconvenience.
  • With the schedule changes that have happened this year, I know that it can be difficult to make sure that everyone is getting in two practices a week.  My preference is for 4th-8th graders in the afternoon and K-3rd in the morning, but I am also willing to make exceptions to meet the needs of students who are eager to participate.  I am attaching a practice schedule preference checklist that I will ask each parent to complete.  Please return it as soon as possible.
  • Also, due to a different scheduling conflict that came up, we have to cancel our extra practice that was scheduled for Wed. 12/11.  Again, please refer to the updated schedule (also available on the Bateman website: http://bateman.cps.edu/bateman-chess.html).

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),                                                                                                                                                                                                               Nov. 14, 2019

Congratulations to all of the players who made it out to the first tournament of the school year at Brooks High School!  Thank you to all of the parents for your patience with many of the issues that came up with the tournament operations, and your understanding that I felt obligated to step in to assist with the management of the tournament.  It was difficult for me to be away from the team for most of the event, and I appreciate all of the parents who helped maintain the team room.

We have a few changes to our schedule as a result of makeup days for the practices that were missed during the strike.  Instead of having Free Chess Fridays, we will have four extra practices on the following Fridays: 11/22, 12/6, 12/13, and 12/20.  These are now practice sessions, which means that attendance is expected on these days, instead of optional.  These extra practices will be a great opportunity to get some more focused attention on strategies that will help students not only in chess, but also in life.

Here are a few reminders about All-Stars activities and expectations for the rest of November and into December:

  • Please drop off your child at 7:15am at Door 1.  There will be no early drop-off option, due to staffing.
  • You can always check the Bateman Chess Team website (http://bateman.cps.edu/bateman-chess.html) for any updates on the practice and events schedule.
  • The registration has ended for this Saturday’s CPS Jr. Prep Bowl tournament at Chicago Vocational High School (2100 E. 87th st.).  For those who registered, please by on time for check-in before 9:00am.  The tournament is a special 5-board team format, and I will be explaining how it works to the players who are participating this week.  The flyer with the details of the tournament was already sent home, but you can see it on the Bateman team website as well.
  • Everyone’s Chesskid.com account is now active.  Students should be logging in to get some extra practice whenever possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact me at acgeisler@cps.edu or (773)534-5055.
Sincerely, Mr. Geisler
