Richard SchreiberVisual ArtsHello, I am honored and excited to be joining the Bateman community as your middle school visual arts teacher. Born and raised in northern California, I studied Economics and Creative Writing at Santa Clara University prior to moving abroad and discovering my vocation for teaching while working as an ESL instructor in Vietnam. I returned to the US to attend the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, receiving my Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree in 2013. In the 12 years that followed, I served as a K-4th and 5-8th grade art teacher at Bridge Elementary in the Dunning neighborhood.
I live with my wife, Anna, and our 3-year old son in Lincoln Square. When not teaching or spending time with my family, my preferred activities include traveling, biking, hiking, learning languages, dancing, playing/watching/coaching soccer, and, yes, creating art. The middle school visual arts curriculum at Bateman is centered around the investigation, creation, presentation, and interpretation of works of art. The Elements of Art and Principles of Design provide the framework and terminology by which we analyze and discuss ours and others' art pieces in an objective manner. Students will be exposed to a wide range of media, tools, and techniques through mini-lessons inspired by well known artists, representing an array of realities and perspectives across time and space. Mini lessons will be complemented by longer form personal (or collaborative) projects developed from individual students' unique motivations and material preferences. The student art class experience is amplified by a classroom economy that stems from the belief that artwork has intrinsic value. The "art economy" is a way to enhance student motivation, engagement, and creative productivity both in and outside of art class. Operated via ClassBank.com, students can earn "art bucks" through a variety of methods (students jobs, completed lessons, the sale of their artwork, etc.). Students can then spend or save this digital currency for art supplies, classroom incentives, or a variety of other items in the Art Shop.
