Meet Bateman Elementary's February Teacher of the Month Please join us in congratulating the Bateman School February, 2016 Teacher of the Month: Ms. Patti Freckelton. Ms. Freckelton received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and Special Education from Bradley University in Peoria, IL. She is in her ninth year of teaching in Chicago Public Schools. Currently she is a resource teacher for 6th-8th graders, teaching both English language arts and math. Prior to working at Bateman, Ms. Freckelton spent six years teaching at Enrico Fermi Elementary School. While at Fermi she taught 3rd-5th grade self-contained, K-8th resource, 1st-3rd self-contained, and also co-taught for 1st and 2nd grade. She also co-chaired the Educational Environment Team, which focused on increasing the number of students with special needs being educated in their least restrictive environment. As a part of this effort, she led multiple professional developments, both for staff and parents, in an effort to empower the learning process for students with special needs.During the summer of 2009, Ms. Freckelton was a Senior Associate for the Urban Education Leaders Internship Program in Washington D.C. While working in the D.C. Public Schools Office of Special Education, she wrote and distributed a bi-weekly newsletter that kept district staff up-to-date on special education related news. Additionally, Ms. Freckelton was a member of the interview committees for Teach DC and Master Educator. In 2011, Ms. Freckelton received a Master of Arts degree in Social and Cultural Foundations in Education from DePaul University. Ms. Freckelton was also a Teach Plus Teaching Policy Fellow from 2012-2013, where she and the other members of her working group worked closely with CPS in rolling out the new REACH teacher evaluation system. Ms. Freckelton was a candidate for National Board certification through the Chicago Teachers Union Nurturing Teacher Leadership (NTL) program and achieved National Board Certification in November of 2012. Ms. Freckelton has mentored fellow CPS teachers going through the National Board certification process with NTL since achieving certification. In January of 2013, she was recognized at the Chicago Board of Education meeting during the Honoring Excellence segment as a newly certified National Board teacher. Ms. Freckelton was also honored as one of 100 Outstanding CPS Teachers by Office-Max in January of 2013. Currently at Bateman School, Ms. Freckelton is a member of the PBIS Committee and teaches for After School All Stars. She is also on the Chicago Teachers Union Special Education Committee. In her free time, Ms. Freckelton enjoys spending time with her two-year-old son, James, and husband, Nick. She also enjoys trying new restaurants in Chicago, going to concerts and sporting events (Go Cubs!), running and watching HGTV. We are thrilled to have Ms. Freckleton on our Bateman team! Congratulations! Meet Bateman Elementary's January Teacher of the Month Please join us in congratulating James Phelps as Bateman Elementary’s January, 2016 Teacher of the Month. We asked Mr. Phelps to share his bio with us. Please read below: Mr. Phelps has been teaching at Bateman since 1991. He began by teaching students to read in a classroom for first and second grade bilingual students who spoke any language other than Spanish. Over the years, he has also taught fifth, sixth, and seventh grade students. He even served as the school disciplinarian for half a year during his “free time.” Mr. Phelps began teaching social studies in the eighth grade in 2005. Since then, he has been helping Bateman families with their high school applications. In 2010, he started the Bateman chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. He has been the coordinator for the trips to New York City, Washington, D.C., and Springfield for the past two years. Mr. Phelps began teaching with a B.A. in history. Later, he added a Master’s of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction. In 2014, the School of Education at Loyola University selected Mr. Phelps to serve as the first teacher-trainer for its Teaching with Primary Sources program. He has received multiple nominations for the Golden Apple Award and has presented at the state social studies conference a number of times. When not teaching, Mr. Phelps keeps busy with a number of personal activities. He volunteers at the Common (food) Pantry in the Bateman neighborhood. For exercise, he rides his bicycle 3,000 miles per year in the warmer months and enjoys downhill and cross-country skiing in the winter. He also enjoys hiking and sailing in the Great North Woods. In the past, Mr. Phelps has appeared on stage as a professional actor. These days, he is delighted to watch current and former students at such events as swim meets, band recitals, and ballet performances. Best of all, he has seen a number of students appear on stage to receive their college diplomas! Congratulations, Mr. Phelps! Thank you for all that you do to support our Bateman Community! Meet Bateman Elementary's December Teacher of the Month Please join us in congratulating Mindy Doychich as Bateman Elementary’s December, 2015 Teacher of the Month. We asked Ms. Doychich to share her bio with us. Please read below: My name is Mindy Doychich and I am proud to be a teacher at Bateman Elementary School! It is my pleasure to work among some of the most talented and wonderful teachers and administrators in the profession. I am excited to say that I have been teaching in Chicago Public Schools for thirteen years and have had the pleasure of teaching a variety of grade levels such as kindergarten, first, third, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth. Currently, I am a sixth grade, middle school, science teacher. Not only do I love teaching science but I love doing science in everyday life! Science is simply asking questions about the world around us. I believe that every person has a scientist inside of them wondering about the way things work. It is my honor to serve the Bateman School community as a teacher representative of the Local School Council (LSC). In addition to serving on the LSC, I enjoy collaborating with my colleagues to make Bateman the best neighborhood school possible. As a member of the PPLC, ILT, MTSS Team, EL team, Science Committee, PBIS, Health and Wellness Team, I hope to be a leader and contributing member of the awesome Bateman Team. When I'm not at school, you can find me playing with my son Jack, taking my dog, Brunch to the dog park, reading a new book, weightlifting, and cheering on the Michigan State Spartans or the Chicago Blackhawks. Above all else, spending time with my family and friends is my favorite thing to do any day of the week. As a lifelong learner myself, I am a proud graduate of Michigan State University, go green! I also attended National Louis University where I completed a Master’s Degree in Administrative Leadership, Loyola University to complete an endorsement in teaching English Learners, and the University of Chicago, where I obtained an endorsement in adolescent studies and general science. Meet Bateman Elementary's November Teacher of the Month It is with great esteem and appreciation that we announce the November, 2015 teacher of the month. Please read about this amazing teacher and congratulate her on this special recognition. Ms. Hurst is an amazing 4th grade teacher! She has taught at Bateman for a total of eight years. Throughout these eight years, she has been involved in a variety of leadership roles and committees, such as serving as the math teacher leader for grades 3-5, grade level leader for two grade levels, coach for the Bateman girls' volleyball and basketball teams, PPC and PPLC member, as well as being part of the UbD team that traveled to Connecticut to learn from the experts. She recently completed a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an ESL endorsement from Concordia University- Chicago and is a loud and proud supporter of Purdue University, where she received her undergraduate degree in elementary education. Ms. Hurst believes in collaboration. She uses Class Dojo to communicate about her students' behavior. They earn points for following the Blaze Ways of being safe, responsible, and respectful. Ms. Hurst believes that parents should always be informed about their child's performance at school. According to Ms. Hurst, “I love teaching, because it allows me to to help students learn and grow, create critical thinkers and problem solvers, keeps me on my toes, and helps me learn a great deal, as well.” When not at Bateman, she enjoys spending time with friends exploring Chicago and all there is to do here. She enjoys being active, whether it's playing in a volleyball league or going for a run. Her family is small, but she is very close to them. She often travels to Michigan to see her parents or Cincinnati to visit her sister, brother-in-law, and adorable nephew, Jack. Meet Bateman Elementary's October Teacher of the Month Peggy Butler is an 8th Grade math teacher at Bateman! When asked to share a little information about her motivation to become a teacher and her experiences as an educator, Ms. Butler shared the following: “As a little child, I'd gather the smaller neighborhood children and run a make-shift Saturday school. So 17 years later, I'm still turning my childhood pretend play into a teaching career I love! I've been at Bateman for all 17 years; I truly feel the students, teachers, and administration are my second family. At Bateman, I'm a participant on the Math Leadership Team and the EL team. This year, I am excited to be working with teachers to help instruction. Outside of school, I have two beautiful children. Reagan is 12 years old, and Declan is 8. They keep me busy running to hockey and drama classes! Ms. Butler is an amazing asset to Bateman. Her instruction, collaboration, and leadership skills are second to none. Congratulations, Ms. Butler! September, 2015 Teacher of the Month Bateman Elementary is proud to present Mr. Vicente Lopez, as the September, 2015 Teacher of the Month. Mr. Lopez was born and raised in the mountains of Durango, Mexico. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 16 where he enrolled in ESL classes and earned his High School diploma all while successfully holding a full-time job. He attended Chicago Loop College (known today as Harold Washington College), then went on to earn his bachelor’s degree through Northeastern Illinois University. Again, Mr. Lopez worked full time while he attended school. His 20-year work experience at Pizzeria Uno provided him with various life and work skills that would eventually lead him into a managerial role and influence his decision to further his education. He returned to school, obtained his master’s degree in Urban Education from Columbia College, and embarked on a 17 year career path in education as a teacher. Mr. Lopez has been a teacher at Bateman Elementary since 1998. Currently, he teaches 7th grade math and truly demonstrates his passion for teaching in all that he does. Recent visits to Mr. Lopez’s room have brought pride to the eyes of the administrative team. From his English Language Learner scaffolds, to his methods for encouraging student voice and ownership, his excellent planning and lesson delivery are beyond commendable! He participates on the math team, on the English Learner leadership team, and even volunteers his time each morning to meet with students who may need additional support in math. Mr. Lopez is happily married and enjoys being father to “Isaac”, a handsome, energetic, 3 year old boy. His hobbies are running, cycling (thanks to 8th grade teacher Mr. Phelps), and vacationing with his family. More than anything else, he truly enjoys taking his son to the park. La Escuela Elemental Bateman presenta con mucho orgullo al Sr. Vicente López como el maestro del mes de Septiembre de 2015. El Sr. López nació y creció en las montañas de Durango, México. El emigró a los Estados Unidos a la edad de 16 años donde se inscribió a clases de ESL (inglés como segundo idioma) y obtuvo su diploma de secundaria cuando al mismo tiempo trabajaba de tiempo completo y con mucho éxito. El fue al Colegio del Loop de Chicago (ahora conocido como el Colegio Harold Washington), posteriormente el obtuvo su título profesional por parte de la Universidad Northeastern de Illinois. Linda Koehler Prior to becoming a teacher at Bateman, Ms. Koehler attended Bateman as a student from first through eighth grades. Ms. Koehler’s first line of work was in the field of business. After 13 years, she went back to school to receive both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in teaching from National-Louis University. Bateman is Ms. Koehler’s first and only teaching job, and she couldn't be happier to be here as she finishes her twenty-third year. For the first ten years she taught third and fourth grades, and when she was asked to be part of the new comprehensive gifted program, she was thrilled to accept. In her words, “Teaching to smart, funny, and charming second grade students is both educating and entertaining on a daily basis. My primary focus each year is always reading. There is no greater joy than seeing reluctant readers in September turn into avid readers of many genres by the end of the year.” Ms. Koehler has enjoyed mentoring both new and veteran teachers. She feels gratification when helping teachers in need. Ms. Koehler has been part of the PBIS committee since its inception at Bateman. For the past two years she has also enjoyed being part of the literacy team and bringing back wonderful ideas to the Kdg.-2nd grade teachers. This year she joined the ILT committee and enjoys working with each member of the committee. In addition, Ms. Koehler serves on the social committee and has helped planned the holiday party and is currently planning the retirement party. Ms. Koehler has had many projects funded through Donors Choose. Because of her creative innovations, she has been able to purchase a beautiful carpet, bean bags, a small-group meeting table, five rolling bookshelves and bins, hundreds of books on many genres, and many more items. Her greatest accomplishment is helping young students become avid, life-long readers. In Ms. Koehler’s words, “If I've developed readers by the end of the year, I feel I've been successful.” Ms. Koehler, you are wonderful! Thank you! La señora Koehler ha disfrutado ser mentora de maestros nuevos y veteranos. Ella siente gratificación cuando ayuda a otros. La señora Koehler has sido parte del comite PBIS desde su comienzo. En los pasados dos años ella ha disfrutado también ser parte del equipo de literatura y traer maravillosas ideas a los maestros de kinder a segundo grado. Este año ella se unió al comite ILT y goza trabajando con cada uno de los miembros del equipo. Ademas, la señora Koehler sirve en el comite social y ha apoyado a planear la fiesta decembrina y está actualmente planeando la fiesta de retiro. La señora Koehler ha tenido muchos proyectos con fondos obtenidos a través de Donors Choose. Nancy Solayman Ms. Nancy Solayman received her undergraduate degree from Northeastern Illinois University where she majored in Education and minored in Geography and Environmental Science. She is also endorsed in Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science at the middle school level. She has been teaching for nine years and has been part of the Bateman School community for three years, teaching her fantastic fourth graders. In her years of teaching she has had a wide variety of training and experiences. She has taught third, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade. She is dedicated to working with students, parents, and fellow staff to enhance the learning experience at Bateman. She relishes at implementing new approaches in teaching reading, math, and writing. Ms. Solayman is adept at developing curricula, utilizing data to inform instructional practice, and participating on the Instructional Leadership Team/MTSS Team. She excels at mentoring student teachers and fostering collaboration among colleagues (PLC), effectively adapting various teaching methodologies to diverse learners, and leading development and delivery of professional development (CCSS Network Teacher Leader). Ms. Solayman works tirelessly so that each and every one of her students make progress towards individualized goals. Her students recently made phenomenal gains on their reading and math MAP goals. Their growth is a testament to her relentless teaching. Thank you, Ms. Solayman for all that you do! La Sra. Solayman por todo lo que usted hace! We are proud to present Ms. Josefina Nava as May’s Teacher of the Month! Josefina Nava has many roles, all of which she loves. Among her most important roles are that of being a mother, wife, and of course, teacher. She was born and raised in South Chicago to immigrant parents who placed a major emphasis on education. They gave her the support she needed to persevere and succeed. She attended Illinois State University in Normal, IL and graduated in May, 2005 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Bilingual/Bicultural Education, minoring in Spanish. She feels blessed to have started her teaching career at Bateman Elementary and is currently celebrating her 10th year as an educator. Working with Bateman staff members, the community, and most importantly, the students at Bateman the past 10 years, have helped her to grow and gain an extended family while doing what she loves. She began her career as an EL Resource/ Spanish teacher and also taught Spanish as a Foreign Language. Currently she teaches an aspiring and inspiring second grade class who keeps her on her toes. In 2010 Ms. Nava was married. She is the mother of two wonderful children, ages 12, and 4. She enjoys reading a good book, spending quality time with her family and friends, and watching her students grow. Ms. Nava has volunteered her time at various school events, serves as an active member of the Science Committee, and provides intensive intervention instruction to 2nd graders in the Ready Readers after-school program. Her talents are limitless! Congratulations, Ms. Nava! We appreciate your dedication to our Bateman Community! We are proud to present Mr. Adam Geisler as April’s Teacher of the Month. His talent and dedication have been recognized by many! After graduating from Georgia State University in 2000 with a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Adam taught in south Atlanta for a year and a half. He then moved to Beijing, China with his wife, where they both taught English at Tsinghua University. After two years Adam and his wife moved to Chicago. After subbing for about a year in CPS, Adam joined the Bateman staff in 2006. Adam taught 6th grade for 8 years and currently teaches 5th grade. In Adam’s words, they are a “delightful group of students” and we are certain his students admire his commitment to their learning as well. In 2012, Adam was elected as the staff's CTU Delegate and continues to serve in this role. Around school, students mostly know Mr. Geisler for his gifted talent of playing, teaching, and coaching chess. He began Bateman's chess club 9 years ago. Bateman's chess team has qualified for the city playoffs each of the last 5 years. Every year, the team has improved, and the Bateman chess club continues to excel, bringing “home” more awards than we have room to showcase! This year’s club, in particular, has developed into one of the most competitive teams in the city. Please congratulate Mr. Geisler! We are so proud to have him on our Bateman team! We are proud to announce Ms. Natalie Vigilante and Ms. Samantha Schouweiler as the March, 2015 Teachers of the month. Ms. Vigilante was born and raised in Chicago and has a lot of Chicago pride! She stepped away from Chicago for a few years for college earning a Bachelor of Arts at Regis University in Denver, Colorado. She also holds a Masters Degree in Elementary Education from DePaul University. Ms. Vigilante has been teaching for nine years, eight of those years are at Bateman! Currently, she is a 5th grade teacher for the Comprehensive Gifted Program where she teaches all content areas. In addition, she is the teacher liaison for the Student Council group and a member of the PPLC. In her free time, she enjoys reading, trying new restaurants, and traveling. She tries to live her life by the motto "Be kind whenever possible, it's always possible!" We congratulate Ms. Vigilante on this special honor and appreciate all that she does for her students and our Bateman Community! Thank you, Ms. Vigilante! Ms. Schouweiler joined Bateman’s staff this year as the music teacher. She earned her music degree and teaching degree at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa and has been teaching in the Chicago Public Schools for 3 years. During the school day she teaches music to students in Pre-K through 4th grade. She also offers many after school programs including Boomwhacker Ensemble, Trumpet Ensemble, Flute/Clarinet Ensemble, Group Piano Class, and Chorus.
