A Glimpse of the Class of 2024's High School Selections
At Bateman, we believe that through collaboration and partnership, all students will be placed in a High School that fits the needs of the student and family. Throughout Chicago, there are a number of varying programs, school types, and interests to which students may apply. No matter if attending a Program school to Neighborhood to Selective Enrollment, all graduates will be successful and prepared to embark on the next chapter of their educational journey.
High School Selection Process
Bateman students and families are fortunate to work alongside Ms. Rivera, our amazing school counselor, and the 8th Grade Teachers. Beginning in 6th Grade, students are provided preview discussions to begin to understand what happens after their years at Bateman. Ms. Rivera continues to meet with all 7th and 8th Grade students and works closely with them to explore all the varying types of High Schools (see below).

Students are considered for high school programs based on a combination of factors that include:
- Results from any required admissions screenings or supplementary requirements (e.g., testing, auditions, essays, etc.)
- Whether any priority preferences are considered (e.g., siblings attending the school, proximity to the school, etc.)
- The order that they ranked each program on their application
- The number of seats available in each program
- Each program’s selection process (lottery or point system)
Types of High Schools
Neighborhood: This program is housed in a high school with a neighborhood attendance boundary. In most cases, students can apply to neighborhood programs from throughout the city, and most neighborhood programs offer automatic admittance to students who reside within the school’s attendance boundary. A limited number of neighborhood programs only accept students who live within the school’s neighborhood attendance boundary. All students are guaranteed placement at their neighborhood school. If a family wishes to attend their neighborhood school, there is no need to apply through GoCPS. If a student lives within Bateman attendance Boundaries and would like to continue in their neighborhood school, the student will attend Roosevelt High School.
Program Choice: Program Groups are categories containing all the academic programs you can apply to using GoCPS. This is one of the best ways to explore your options because when you apply, you’ll apply to individual programs within a school vs. to the school as a whole. IB, Magnet, and Scholars programs are also included in Program Choice but require additional admissions qualifications. These schools include Von Steuben Scholars, Amundsen IB, and more. About 25% of our current graduates are projected to attend these schools! The largest attended High Schools for the Class of 2023 are Lake View and Von Steuben.
Recent graduates have expressed interest and committed to a variety of Program Types, including Career and Technical Schools (ie Mather), Contract Schools (ie ChiArts), Dual Language Schools (ie Schurz), Service Learning Schools (ie Rickover), and more. Over 35% of current graduates have selected specific program choices and have accepted offers!
Selective Enrollment: Selective Enrollment High Schools provide academically advanced high school students with a challenging and enriched college preparatory experience. Each of the Selective Enrollment High Schools offers a rigorous curriculum with mainly honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. The schools strive to develop students’ critical and analytical thinking skills, and promote diverse academic inquiry by bringing together students from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Testing is required in order for students to be considered for these programs.
