What does this mean for families?

At Bateman, we follow the Two-Way Immersion (TWI) model of dual language instruction. This means that native Spanish speakers and non-native Spanish speakers are grouped in a classroom setting where at least 50% of the instruction is in Spanish. The Bateman Model starts with 80% of instruction in Spanish and 20% of instruction in English in Pre-K and Kindergarten. Students will enter the intermediate grades with a 50:50 ratio of Spanish and English. This ratio will continue until our students graduate fully bilingual and biliterate. Our students will be immersed in a multicultural curriculum that raises global awareness for all.

Will students who are taught in two languages fall behind their peers who are taught in one language?
According to a research study conducted by Thomas and Collier, students who enter dual language programs outperform monolingual students.

How is this program different from the Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) model that Bateman has had in the past?

The TWI dual language program that Bateman School has implemented in the fall of 2018 differs from the TBE program due to the additive language shift. The TBE program moved our native Spanish speaking students away from Spanish instruction into full English instruction. Instead, the TWI dual program establishes equity in both English and Spanish language with the goal of all students becoming fully bilingual and biliterate participants of a multicultural community. Our goal is to develop language and cultural awareness for all students in the program.
