Primary
First and foremost our goal is to nurture our students into becoming active, independent learners. This is the beginning of their school career, and we believe it is vital to establish a love of learning and an insatiable curiosity about life and the world around them. Bateman students learn by actively engaging in meaningful units of study, asking and answering questions about the world around them, and going public through investigation days with their newfound knowledge.
Reading and Writing Workshop
Becoming a fluent and active reader is the first and most vital step in creating a child who will be excited about learning! In the primary grades we focus on fostering students’ understanding and knowledge of reading through developing proficient readers across a range of fiction and nonfiction texts. Hand-in-hand with reading skills, students develop a practical and increasingly sophisticated ability to write for a variety of audiences.
At any given point in a reading or writing lesson, you might see our students spread out all over the classroom diving into a new reading journey or diligently creating a new piece of writing to add to their portfolios. Through the workshop model, teachers have the opportunity to differentiate instruction and individualize lessons to meet the various needs of the class through small groups. Students challenge themselves and grow their independence by choosing their own texts, setting new goals, and practicing strategies to critically think about books!
All primary teachers have received intensive training and continue to develop their knowledge as they implement the Lucy Calkins Units of Study for Reading and Writing. Teachers are actively using culturally relevant texts and mapping curriculum throughout the primary grades to create a cohesive educational path for all learners here at Bateman.
Mathematics
Of course our students learn the basics of mathematics but they learn so much more. They are taught to think, discuss, and defend their answers in many math situations. Our goal is to teach students to reason mathematically and to communicate that reasoning clearly to others. We are building independence and confidence that will serve them well as they climb the education ladder. Through the Go Math curriculum, students are exposed to a myriad of strategies for problem solving and self select the method that works best for their own mathematical thinking!
Science
Inquiry is at the heart of all science units here at Bateman. Students investigate problems, experiment and test ideas, and explore new possibilities through vertically aligned FOSS kits according to the Next Generation Science Standards. Classrooms visit another on Science Investigation Days to teach and learn from their peers.
Social and Emotional Learning
We want our students feel safe in and out of the classroom, and we accomplish this through our PBIS, Second Step, and Restorative Practices approach. Students are taught skills helping them in all aspects of communication including empathy, managing emotions and anger, and problem solving. We focus on always being safe, responsible, and respectful wherever we are in school or the community while learning how to navigate difficult situations.
