Eighth Grade

Welcome back!

We'd like to extend a very big welcome back to your final year at Bateman! Whether you've been a part of the Bateman family since pre-school, or are just joining this school year, we are so excited to support you as you prepare to make the big transition to high school next fall. We hope that you are ready for a year filled with learning, making memories, and forming connections with your classmates and teachers. A few important things to note about this year:
  • School begin at 8:00 and ends at 3:00! Doors will open at 7:50, so please plan to arrive then so you are ready to begin right at 8:00. Arrivals after 8:00 will be considered tardy.

Curriculum Updates
  • Math: This year we will be using Illustrative Mathematics, a problem-solving, inquiry-based curriculum that fosters students' positive mathematical identities.
    • All 8th graders will develop an understanding of  geometric transformations, similarity, slope and linear relationships, linear equations, exponents, functions and the Pythagorean Theorem.  Algebra 1 students continue their learning exploring topics of exponential and quadratic functions.
  • ELA: Students will develop their love of reading and their identity as writers through novel study units. We will begin the year by exploring the concept of dreams and journeys through a study of the novel We Are Not From Here. Students will explore elements of characterization, theme, setting, and plot.
Science: Our scientists will explore units on Force and Motion, Magnetic Fields, Light Waves, Earth Moon and Sun and Natural Selection.

Social Studies/Civics: Students will learn about the inner workings of our government, how different levels interact with one another, and their role as civic actors in the community.

Philosophy & Instructional Approach

Instruction in eighth grade remains both rigorous and student centered. By providing choice, inquiry based learning and small group instruction students are prepared for the next chapter of their lives: high school.

The eighth grade team proudly grounds itself in the following principles:

-Growth mindset
-Commitment
-Perseverance
-Tolerance
-Respect
-Collaboration

These principles guide us to our ultimate end goal:100% graduation rate.
