< Fifth Grade >

5th Grade

Philosophy

We believe in Child First/Student second to empower our fifth graders to be their own advocates.

Instructional Approach

Fifth Grade uses a workshop model to balance direct instruction and small group/independent practice.

Curriculum details

Math:
This year we will be using the GoMath! as our curriculum which aligns with the Common Core Standards. We will implement the workshop model to encourage independent mathematicians.
Year at a Glance
  • Fluency with Whole Numbers and Decimals
  • Operations with Fractions
  • Geometry and Measurement
We use math every day! We encourage families to find examples of math in the real world. We ask that families engage with their child to promote mathematical literacy in their daily lives.

Science: This year we will be using the Science FOSS curriculum, which aligns with NGSS standards. We will implement the workshop model and science labs to work toward mastery of science inquiry. All units of study will focus on using the scientific method to interpret data, and develop models to construct explanations of our understandings. The following three areas of science will be covered this year:
  • Physical Science:  Mixtures and Solutions
    • What makes up matter, seen and unseen?
    • How does matter interact?
  • Earth Science: Earth and Sun
    • What is Earth's place in the universe?
    • What is Earth's atmosphere and what does it have to do with weather?
  • Life Science: Living Systems
    • How do Earth's four major subsystems interact to create sustainable environments for life?

Social Studies
This year, Social Studies will be taught by the homeroom teachers. By engaging with diverse perspectives and primary sources, students will build an understanding of conflict that defined our early nation. To support Social Emotional learning we will be implementing a weekly second step lesson.

Reading-
In ELA, we will implement the Lucy Calkins Workshop model. This structure provide students to receive individualized instruction that reflects their needs and challenges them to reach individual goals. Students will grow their reading skills in small group and whole class settings while learning to think deeply and analytically about analyze author's craft, theme and perspective as well as the world around them. The texts chosen mirror our student body and reflects the growing needs of a 21st century learner.
  • Asking and answering questions about stories and texts independently using evidence to quote accurately
  • Figure out the meaning of unknown words in a text using context, word relationships or tools
  • Writing in complete sentences and well developed paragraphs about what they are learning
  • Show something new they have learned from a topic or text

CPS Grading Scale
90-100 = A (meets/exceeds standard)
80-89 = B (meets standard)
70-79 = C (approaching standard)
60-69 = D (not yet demonstrating an understanding of the standard)

Weights by Categories
50% Assessments - Child demonstrates mastery of content taught
50% Classwork - Daily practice toward content mastery goal (notebooks/labs/activities)

Schedule

In 5th grade, students will spend 60 minutes in four content classes (ELA, Social Studies, Math, and Science). Students will rotate classrooms with their homerooms. They will also have an intervention block (WIN - What I Need) where they will receive supports for their individual or class needs.

Expectations

Locker Expectations
It is an exciting time for our students because 5th grade is the first year that they have their own locks and lockers.
Students are expected to…
  • Know their locker combination and open locker independently
  • Keep their locker cleaned and organized
  • Have materials needed for class at the start of the day
  • Use lockers appropriately

 Citizenship Requirements
Students are expected to follow the BLAZE WAYS
  • Be Safe
  • Be Responsible
  • Be Respectful
How to be a 5th grader
Students should refer to the 5th Grade 101 document
