Curriculum details
Math:
This year we will be using the GoMath! as our curriculum which aligns with the Common Core Standards. We will implement the workshop model to encourage independent mathematicians.
Year at a Glance
Science: This year we will be using the Science FOSS curriculum, which aligns with NGSS standards. We will implement the workshop model and science labs to work toward mastery of science inquiry. All units of study will focus on using the scientific method to interpret data, and develop models to construct explanations of our understandings. The following three areas of science will be covered this year:
Social Studies
This year, Social Studies will be taught by the homeroom teachers. By engaging with diverse perspectives and primary sources, students will build an understanding of conflict that defined our early nation. To support Social Emotional learning we will be implementing a weekly second step lesson.
Reading-
In ELA, we will implement the Lucy Calkins Workshop model. This structure provide students to receive individualized instruction that reflects their needs and challenges them to reach individual goals. Students will grow their reading skills in small group and whole class settings while learning to think deeply and analytically about analyze author's craft, theme and perspective as well as the world around them. The texts chosen mirror our student body and reflects the growing needs of a 21st century learner.
CPS Grading Scale
90-100 = A (meets/exceeds standard)
80-89 = B (meets standard)
70-79 = C (approaching standard)
60-69 = D (not yet demonstrating an understanding of the standard)
Weights by Categories
50% Assessments - Child demonstrates mastery of content taught
50% Classwork - Daily practice toward content mastery goal (notebooks/labs/activities)

Schedule
In 5th grade, students will spend 60 minutes in four content classes (ELA, Social Studies, Math, and Science). Students will rotate classrooms with their homerooms. They will also have an intervention block (WIN - What I Need) where they will receive supports for their individual or class needs.
