Curriculum Details
In Fourth Grade Math, students will build on the strong foundation they have built over the last few years. We will begin to use larger numbers, use patterns to solve equations, explore geometry, and much more. We are excited to be starting a new Math curriculum this year, Illustrative Mathematics!
In Reading, students will make connections between real world events and fictional stories. We start the year reading realistic fiction and end with historical fiction, while focusing on nonfiction midyear. These units build on students’ understanding of character traits and nonfiction text features from previous years.
In Fourth Grade Writing, students will be working through the writing process to create realistic fiction stories, personal and persuasive essays, informational texts, and literary essays. Students will have the opportunity to develop technical parts of their writing while also working on elaboration and craft.
In Science this year, students will explore the world around them using hands on activities including experiments, observations, and multimedia resources. Our units include Environments, Energy and Electricity, and Rocks, Soil, and Landforms.
In Social Studies, fourth graders will get to know their home state of Illinois through investigating its history, geography, government, and the many cultures who call it home. Students will also learn about the regions of the United States and the characteristics that define and describe them. The students will have a variety of experiences and opportunities to showcase what they have learned.
