Our Instructional ApproachIn planning instruction, the third grade team draws upon a repertoire of instructional approaches and methods, and uses combinations of these in each lesson and unit to meet the needs of the students. We strive to be mindful of our grade-level core values: to be strategic, reflective, and realistic. In reading and writing, we will be implementing a Balanced Literacy framework through the Workshop Model to build confident, skilled literacy learners. This structured model will challenge students to take charge of their own learning as they actively engage in their work and develop their literacy skills in a variety of learning settings such as small groups, guided reading, and individualized learning inquiry groups. Alongside the workshop model, we will integrate social studies and make our learning visible to the public with authentic learning products. In science, we are utilizing Amplify Science for core science curriculum! This program turns students into active scientists and engineers investigating real-world problems through hands-on experiments, reading, and discussion. In each unit, students step into real-world roles—like meteorologists or engineers—using hands-on investigations, science articles, and digital simulations to make sense of how our world works! In Math, we will be implementing the Illustrative Math curriculum which is a problem-solving, problem-based curriculum designed to make math active, meaningful, and accessible for every student. Instead of just memorizing procedures, IM encourages students to think like mathematicians. Students explore real-world tasks, talk through different ways to solve problems, and connect new concepts to what they already know. Illustrative Math offers an engaging and interactive approach to learning math through the use of manipulatives, games, digital applications and problem solving skills. |

- The Joffrey Ballet’s The Nutcracker: Students will step into a magical holiday classic, experiencing world-class storytelling, costume design, and music at the historic Lyric Opera House.
- Chicago History Museum: Hands-on exhibits will bring our social studies curriculum to life as students uncover the rich stories, vibrant cultures, and key events that shaped our city.
- Chicago Architecture Boat Tour: We’ll take learning to the water! A guided river cruise will highlight Chicago’s world-famous skyscrapers, engineering marvels, and structural design.
