Philosophy

As a kindergarten team, we value the development of the whole child!  We believe that students flourish in a positive and nurturing environment.  Becoming a fluent and active reader is the first and most vital step in creating a child who will be excited about learning.  We believe this is achieved through parent partnership, student choice and independence, and finding joy in every day!

Instructional Approach

At any given point during the day, you might see our students spread out all over the classroom diving into a new reading journey or diligently creating a new piece of writing to add to their portfolios.  Through the workshop model, teachers have the opportunity to differentiate instruction and individualize lessons to meet the various needs of the class through small groups for all subject areas.  Students challenge themselves and grow their independence by choosing their own texts, setting new goals, and practicing strategies to critically think about the world around them!  We aim to empower each of our students to find their voice, even at a young age! This is represented through the integration of social studies in all ELA Units of Study.

Mathematics Units of Study

We want each kindergartner to be a confident problem solver!  All classrooms follow the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum, which emphasizes an inquiry based approach to mastering the common core grade level skills. By providing multiple strategies to the same skill, students are able to build their tool kits and repertoire of explanations to justify their thought process.  Mathematicians participate in daily calendar exercises, Math Talk,  mathematical conversations and apply their knowledge with hands-on and play-based scenarios/ centers.
