Students learned about urban art and social responsibility while creating a graffiti-style "tag." Students first learned about the history of graffiti and then discussed the controversy surrounding it -- is it vandalism or is it art? After looking at a multitude of popular graffiti artists' work, students looked at and emulated four popular styles of lettering including: bubble letters, block letters, wildstyle and calligraffiti. Students were then invited to design a signature (tag) using lettering of their own design.

The 6th grade students are currently working on their own personal mandala. Students first used a protractor and compass to create a perfect circle and divide their circle into 12 sections. Then, they added concentric circles inside the first circle. Students began adding designs in black pen, focusing on radial symmetry.
