Meet Bateman Elementary's February Teacher of the Month Please join us in congratulating the Bateman School February, 2016 Teacher of the Month: Ms. Patti Freckelton. Ms. Freckelton received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and Special Education from Bradley University in Peoria, IL. She is in her ninth year of teaching in Chicago Public Schools. Currently she is a resource teacher for 6th-8th graders, teaching both English language arts and math. Prior to working at Bateman, Ms. Freckelton spent six years teaching at Enrico Fermi Elementary School. While at Fermi she taught 3rd-5th grade self-contained, K-8th resource, 1st-3rd self-contained, and also co-taught for 1st and 2nd grade. She also co-chaired the Educational Environment Team, which focused on increasing the number of students with special needs being educated in their least restrictive environment. As a part of this effort, she led multiple professional developments, both for staff and parents, in an effort to empower the learning process for students with special needs.During the summer of 2009, Ms. Freckelton was a Senior Associate for the Urban Education Leaders Internship Program in Washington D.C. While working in the D.C. Public Schools Office of Special Education, she wrote and distributed a bi-weekly newsletter that kept district staff up-to-date on special education related news. Additionally, Ms. Freckelton was a member of the interview committees for Teach DC and Master Educator. In 2011, Ms. Freckelton received a Master of Arts degree in Social and Cultural Foundations in Education from DePaul University. Ms. Freckelton was also a Teach Plus Teaching Policy Fellow from 2012-2013, where she and the other members of her working group worked closely with CPS in rolling out the new REACH teacher evaluation system. Ms. Freckelton was a candidate for National Board certification through the Chicago Teachers Union Nurturing Teacher Leadership (NTL) program and achieved National Board Certification in November of 2012. Ms. Freckelton has mentored fellow CPS teachers going through the National Board certification process with NTL since achieving certification. In January of 2013, she was recognized at the Chicago Board of Education meeting during the Honoring Excellence segment as a newly certified National Board teacher. Ms. Freckelton was also honored as one of 100 Outstanding CPS Teachers by Office-Max in January of 2013. Currently at Bateman School, Ms. Freckelton is a member of the PBIS Committee and teaches for After School All Stars. She is also on the Chicago Teachers Union Special Education Committee. In her free time, Ms. Freckelton enjoys spending time with her two-year-old son, James, and husband, Nick. She also enjoys trying new restaurants in Chicago, going to concerts and sporting events (Go Cubs!), running and watching HGTV. We are thrilled to have Ms. Freckleton on our Bateman team!
