Bateman Broadcast

Buenos dias, Bateman students, parents and staff!
Today is Monday, April 27, 2020.

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

We hope you are finding your stride and routine with Remote Learning. Please continue reaching out to your teachers and let them know how our school can continue to adapt and support your family.  This week, look for some fun pictures of our Bateman staff and play along by Guess Who: Bateman Edition!  Look for it on Facebook and Twitter and play along!

CPS has been providing weekly online chess tournaments and, of course, our the Bateman Chess Team has been on fire!  Seventh grader Kayin T. has been tied for 1st place with a perfect score for three weeks in a row.  Fifth grader Ashley J. joined him in this week's event with a perfect score as well.  The Bateman Chess Team continues its winning ways, even under the circumstances!

Finally, SHHH! Try to keep it a surprise!  Teacher Appreciation is quickly approaching and we need your help celebrating their dedication to our students!  If you would like to contribute to the celebration, please click here!  More details to come!

We are grateful that you choose to #BeBateman now and always!

Warmest regards,

Georgia & Kate

Thank you to each of you who took the time to meet with your child's teacher on Wednesday for what turned out to be a great Report Card Pick Up Day!  We are appreciative of the support you showed each of our teachers and are grateful for the feedback our teachers were able to share with us based on your discussions.  Chicago Public Schools will be sending report cards in the mail within the next week. Please keep a look out for your child's report card. If you have moved or changed an address, please email

Bateman Broadcast

Buenos dias, Bateman students, parents and staff!
Today is Monday, April 20, 2020.

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

On Friday, Governor Pritzker announced that schools will continue to stay closed and Remote Learning will be the method of education for remainder of the year.  Although we understand the weight of this decision, we are heartbroken that our students will not be together again in our classrooms and hallways this year.  We share your mixed emotions but also recognize that this is the safest measure to ensure the health of our community.  It is in our hands now to find creative ways to stay tied together, just as the Santana family was as they attended the annual Father Daughter dance on Friday!

We are especially saddened for our 8th graders. We know this is not the 8th Grade year you had imagined, as many of you have been waiting in anticipation for the last nine years.  We are celebrating you, alongside all of our students, and want to assure you that there are exciting things to come!

We know there are many questions as a result of this announcement and ask for your patience as we receive information. As we continue in this journey together, you have our commitment to remain responsive in the ways our teachers engage your children, informative in a timely manner, and connected as much as possible.

We are grateful that you choose to #BeBateman now and always!

Warmest regards,

Georgia & Kate

Bateman Broadcast

Buenos dias, Bateman students, parents and staff!
Today is Friday, April 17, 2020.

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

You did it! You made it through our very first week of Remote Learning! Our educators have been working tirelessly to provide meaningful, differentiated instruction for each of our students but we recognize that there is no way we could accomplish this work without each of YOU!

We want to take a special moment to say Thank You for the hard work you are pouring into your children right now.  We know that no two families are experiencing the same thing throughout this pandemic. This is a very unique time that comes with a myriad of emotions.  Some of you may be experiencing loss, balancing new work schedules, trying to teach your children, and much more. Trust us - we see you. We hear you. We’re feeling it, too.

That being said, we want to give each of you a big “A” for such a successful first week. You each deserve an A for:

  • Helping us achieve over 95% engagement with our students!

  • Picking up technology from the school!

  • Reading a book with your child!

  • Encouraging your child to play outside!

  • Responding to your child’s teacher!
  • Giving your child (and yourself!) a break when things get overwhelming!

Speaking of grades…

We acknowledge that you are receiving communications from the district around grading policies and we’ve been addressing these initiatives with our teacher teams to ensure they understand what grading looks like for Bateman.  Rest assured, Quarter 3 grades at Bateman are only representing your child’s progress up to March 17th and the work that students have been completing remotely will only help their grades.  We know that no grade right now is truly reflective of content mastery and want to ensure you that there is more communication forthcoming.

What to expect for next week:

  • Teachers will be reaching out to set up a time to check in with you for Report Card Pick Up on Wednesday, April 22nd via sign up genius or google forms

  • Many grade level teams are surveying families and students to check in on the workload of Week 1

  • You will receive next week’s Remote Learning Plan from your child’s teacher by Monday morning

  • Specials Plans will be emailed to you by your child’s teacher and links will be provided in Monday’s Broadcast again

  • There will be no plans for Wednesday, April 22nd to reserve the time for Report Card Pick Up

Please take the time to reach out to your child’s teacher if you need anything at all.  We are all to work together and support one another.

We encourage you to try some of these fun weekend activities, shutdown the technology for a bit, and enjoy time together.

Warmest regards,

Georgia & Kate

Happy Birthday!
We would like to wish a "feliz cumpleaños" this weekend to...

  • Sikander in Room 126

April 13, 2020

Bateman Broadcast

Buenos dias, Bateman students, parents and staff!
Today is Monday, April 13, 2020.
Remote Learning Begins on Monday, April 13th

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

We hope you had a wonderful Spring Break and all of our students are well rested and eager to start learning again.  We have missed all of you so much!

A very big THANK YOU to our essential workers!  This includes our lunch staff and security who are passing out hundreds of food everyday.  Bateman will continue to be a food location. Please come to door #6 on Sacramento to receive 3 days of food for breakfast and lunch, Monday-Friday, 9:00am - 1:00pm.

Our teachers have worked diligently to create our Remote Learning Plan, which starts today, Monday, April 13th. We can do this! If you haven’t already, please check in with your child’s teacher to know the expectations for our students everyday. In order to make sure students are provided with remote learning opportunities, we need your help. We need to set the expectation that every single Bateman student participates in Remote Learning on a daily basis. With your help of establishing the expectations at home and the teachers daily instruction, our students will continue to learn, stay engaged and connected.

Stay calm and stay the course. Teachers will be monitoring who is present and making sure students are completing their work. Keep in mind, grades can only help a student at this time. However, if a student does not complete an assignment, it will be marked as incomplete and students will be expected to complete it when we return to school.

Each grade level will be sharing a weekly schedule with parents via email by Monday morning of each week.  This schedule will provide time allotments per subject area as well as any live teaching times to anticipate for the week.  You should also receive Essentials Team weekly guides, which are also linked below for the week.

To support families in allowing you to focus on your child's remote learning, we will be transitioning to 2 Broadcasts per week - one weekday version (sent Mondays) and one weekend version (sent Fridays).  We will still include the same elements but you can look at them when it is convenient for you!  We will also continue to distribute District Created Resources upon request for those who do not have access to a printer.

Please reach out with any questions or concerns by email at [email protected].  You may also call the Main Office (773-534-5055) starting today between the hours of 9:00 am - 1:00 pm.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and support as we navigate through this new learning together.

Now more than ever, we feel our community is working together to #BeBateman!

Wishing you and your family health and safety!
-Ms. Davos & Ms. Kloepper

The Museum of Science and Industry has loads of hands on science experiments to try!  Check out this engaging stomp rocket and launch your ideas over spring break!  ...it just looks fun!
  1. Build the stomp rocket launcher by inserting the mouth of the two-liter bottle into one end of the pool noodle. Secure thoroughly with duct tape, trying to make it as airtight as possible.
  2. Insert the PVC pipe or tube into the other end of the pool noodle. This is the launch position for your rocket.
  3. Make your rocket by rolling an 8.5 by 11 piece of paper into a tube so that it fits around the outside of the launch tube. Don't make it tight; the paper should slide on and off. Tape it in place. This is the fuselage of your rocket.
