September, 2015 Teacher of the Month

Bateman Elementary is proud to present Mr. Vicente Lopez, as the September, 2015 Teacher of the Month.  Mr. Lopez was born and raised in the mountains of Durango, Mexico.  He immigrated to the United States at the age of 16 where he enrolled in ESL classes and earned his High School diploma all while successfully holding a full-time job.  He attended Chicago Loop College (known today as Harold Washington College), then went on to earn his bachelor’s degree through Northeastern Illinois University.  Again, Mr. Lopez worked full time while he attended school.  His 20-year work experience at Pizzeria Uno provided him with various life and work skills that would eventually lead him into a managerial role and influence his decision to further his education.  He returned to school, obtained his master’s degree in Urban Education from Columbia College, and embarked on a 17 year career path in education as a teacher.

Mr. Lopez has been a teacher at Bateman Elementary since 1998.  Currently, he teaches 7th grade math and truly demonstrates his passion for teaching in all that he does.  Recent visits to Mr. Lopez’s room have brought pride to the eyes of the administrative team.  From his English Language Learner scaffolds, to his methods for encouraging student voice and ownership, his excellent planning and lesson delivery are beyond commendable!  He participates on the math team, on the English Learner leadership team, and even volunteers his time each morning to meet with students who may need additional support in math.

Mr. Lopez is happily married and enjoys being father to “Isaac”, a handsome, energetic, 3 year old boy. His hobbies are running, cycling (thanks to 8th grade teacher Mr. Phelps), and vacationing with his family.  More than anything else, he truly enjoys taking his son to the park.

Please join us in congratulating Mr. Lopez!  We are so proud to have him on our Bateman Team!
