Community Safety Notice

January 30, 2020

Dear Bateman Parents and Families,

The safety of your children is always our top priority, which is why we must inform you of an incident that was reported to our school this morning. A member of our community reported being approached by a stranger on the way to Bateman. We are grateful that this person arrived to the building safely. The Chicago Police Department (CPD) is investigating this incident, and we are working closely with the CPS Office of Safety and Security. CPD will be providing extra attention to our school during the investigation.

Students at the school may be aware of this incident, and we will have conversations with students about the importance of being attentive and alert while walking to and from school. We encourage you to also remind your children of the following guidance that we are providing to our students:

  • Students are encouraged to travel together in pairs whenever possible.

  • If a student feels uncomfortable or threatened in any way, they should go to the nearest business or populated area and call for help.

  • While having a phone can help in a crisis, students should use phones with good judgment and be aware of their surroundings.

  • Students should report any suspicious vehicles, people, or behavior to the school immediately so that we can investigate with the support of the CPD.

We are taking this situation extremely seriously. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to the school directly.

Sincerely,
Georgia Davos-Vetas

Message from Administration

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

Quarter 2 is quickly coming to a close in the next few weeks!  We will be wrapping up our units of study and can't wait to see all of the great student work in the upcoming days!  Students are gearing up to celebrate their learning and share all of their progress with the community on our Quarter 2 Showcase Day on February 4th!  Formerly known as investigation days, parents will be invited in to share in a celebration of learning with their children.  Teachers will be reaching out with further details in the upcoming weeks!  We hope everyone will be to join us!

Also...The flu season is here!  Please remind your children to wash their hands frequently and get a good night sleep!  If your child has a fever or is vomiting, please keep your child at home.  Students may not return to school until they are fever free for 24 hours (non-medicated).  If you have to give your child Tylenol or Motrin to "get through the day", please keep your child at home so they can get the proper rest needed to recover.  We appreciate you doing your part to keep everyone healthy at school!

Be Empowered • Be Inclusive • Be Kind

Be Bateman!

All the best,
Georgia & Kate

Message from Administration

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

Happy New Year!  Each new year brings a new opportunity for new goals, challenges, and experiences.  Our students have been busy creating new goals for the remainder of the year to ensure their growth is continuous in their personal and academic life.

Many take the new year to create a resolution based on healthy habits.  Luckily, Bateman students strive to live a balanced and healthy lifestyle each day through our Healthy Schools Initiative.  As a Gold Healthy School, let's all resolve to stick to our Wellness Policy:

Resolution #1: Celebrate with non-food treats!
At Bateman, we have two celebration days per year (usually Winter Celebration & end of the year) during which food is allowed.  Please celebrate all other events, including birthdays, with non-food items, such as pencils, etc!

Resolution #2: Pack a Healthy Lunch!
All students are able to eat the wonderful school lunch daily.  Students also have the option to bring a Home Lunch.  If your family chooses to send a Home Lunch, we encourage you to send healthy options on a daily basis.  Please remind your child that their food is only their own and not for sharing.

Be Empowered • Be Inclusive • Be Kind

Be Bateman!

All the best,
Georgia & Kate
