Hello Bateman family,
My name is Alex Fernández and I recently became a part of the Bateman family as the new Dean of Culture and Climate! The dean of culture and climate is a new position Bateman elementary has added in order to continue its focus on the safety and growth of all its students through positive energy, staff support, and community partnerships. I truly believe in focusing on the whole student and that with the kind of support that is offered at Bateman every student can grow and succeed. Growing up the child of hardworking parents from Cuba and Mexico I realized the importance of education early on in life and more importantly the role that educators play in inspiring success and in return made the decision to become an educator. I received my Bachelors degree in History and Secondary Education from Northeastern Illinois University and my Masters degree in School Leadership from the American College of Education. Before joining the Bateman family I spent 8 years at World Language high school teaching a range of Social Science topics ranging from Economics to Contemporary American history. Most recently I was also the Bilingual lead and helped implement bilingual education and school wide testing at World Language High School. During this time I was also lucky enough to be a Network Literacy Facilitator, to participate in a Fulbright Teacher Institute pilot program, and receive a New York Stock Exchange Teachers Fellowship. My wife and I both live in the Bateman elementary neighborhood and can often be found walking our border collie. Living in the neighborhood and working at Bateman I am truly invested in our community and the success of our children. You will see me at many community events representing Bateman and at other times just walking my dog, it is my hope that you come up and say hello. Please feel free to contact me with any question or concern you might have, I am here to serve the community and most important of all the students. If you are in need of after school care, the Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club will be at Bateman on Friday, September 2 for our Supply Drop Off Event! Be sure to stop by their table by the North Office to register your child for the upcoming school year!
