District Update:
Remote Learning Continues

Good evening Bateman Families & Friends,

Chicago Public Schools recently sent emails to families (see below) and held a press conference regarding the reopening for hybrid learning, which has been postponed. Please see below for specific points:

  • Remote Learning will continue for all students tomorrow, Monday, February 1st.
  • Please continue to follow your remote learning schedules as you have throughout the entirety of this year.
  • As of right now, families of students who are scheduled for K-8 Shift A, 4 Days, and Preschool In-Person Learners should plan to come for in-person learning on Tuesday, February 2nd.

All grade level teams emailed Hybrid and Remote schedules that will begin once Hybrid Learning starts. If you have not received your child's Reopening Schedule, please reach out to your child's homeroom teacher. We will be expanding more on our collaborative process of planning these schedules in the Bateman Buzz tomorrow.

Thank you all for your support, flexibility, and understanding during this time. As always, we will continue to keep you as informed as possible and above all, we will continue to #BeBateman.

Our best,
Georgia & Kate

Message from Administration

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

We didn’t think we could say it anymore in a given year but we would be remiss not to acknowledge the incredible flexibility and responsiveness of our teachers, students, and parent community. Earlier in the week, in less than 12 hours, schedules were re-created, tasks re-assigned, and all were re-adjusted to an adapted plan for the week. It truly takes a community to make this all possible. We remain flexible and responsive for tomorrow’s schedule. Teachers will continue to follow the asynchronous afternoon schedule as planned - we know that many families need to coordinate ahead of time and in an attempt to minimize schedule accommodations from the beginning of the week we will make as few alterations as possible. We contacted preschool families earlier this evening to reiterate district directives for no in-person learning tomorrow, January 27th.

Last week, we had the pleasure of meeting with nearly 75 families to discuss our reopening plan and this afternoon, we met with our entire team of educators to review Reopening protocols and provide updates. While we are currently informing families and staff particularly on details regarding in-person learning, we want to emphasize that ensuring an exceptional educational experience for each of our students is in the forefront of our planning. We recognize that families have had to endure a difficult decision making process for Quarter 3 and ask that all families join us in supporting one another through this transition. Each family has made a personal choice with the best intentions for their own child. Although we may be spread across our community, it is critical that we remain one Bateman Family.

Please see below for additional updates and continue checking your emails and news outlets for the most up to date information regarding the CPS K-8 Reopening. We will continue to keep you as informed as possible and are grateful for your continued trust and partnership as we navigate the upcoming weeks.

Our very best,
Georgia & Kate

Reopening Updates
We will continue to update our community with information and FAQs.
Newly added items will be included in this section of the Buzz.

What steps would I take if I want to switch the learning model for my child?
If you selected Learn at Home, you are unable to switch to the Hybrid-Pod Model until 4th quarter. If you selected Hybrid and would like to switch to the Learn from Home model, please email bateman@cps.edu as soon as possible to support planning.

When will I know my own child’s pod assignment and teacher assignment?
Families were notified of shift assignments by Friday, January 22nd via email and phone calls throughout the week. This included information for both In-Person Learners and Remote Learners. If families did not receive information via email, please contact the North Office to update contact information for primary and secondary email accounts.

When will I know my own child’s schedule for February?
Teachers have been collaborating and learning best practices for Reopening to ensure an exemplary educational experience is provided for all students, regardless of their learning location. Teachers will be sharing schedules for in-person learners and remote learners by Friday, January 29th via email.

What steps are necessary to receive the Health Screener text or email?
Parents and guardians of In-Person learners are required to complete a daily health screener for each child attending school. CPS sends a text message or email to the primary contact for each child around 6:00 am. The screener must be completed the morning of attendance no later than 7:30am. To verify that parents or guardians receive the daily reminder, ensure that you have "opted in" to receive district notifications in the North Office by phone at 773-534-5055 or email Ms. Rivera. If you have been receiving the emails to parents with updates regarding reopening, you're all set!

Message from Administration

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

We hope you had a wonderful time this weekend and had some time to reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  There are many great words of wisdom that he left us. Whether it was America’s children or his own, Dr. King emphasized coexisting and expressing love and care for one another throughout his famous speeches. He used images of brotherhood and children to exemplify the relationships he believed Americans should have with one another. To Dr. King, family referred to more than blood relatives - it encompassed all people. Today, his message of prioritizing family is forever ingrained in his legacy, stands as a lesson to be studied and appreciated by generations to come, and can be seen throughout the Bateman Community.

As we are creating the reopening plans for our K-8 students, we have been calling, emailing, and notifying specific families as early as possible with updates and decisions. To date, we have contacted nearly 90% of our Hybrid families via phone and look forward to meeting with parents of hybrid students tomorrow evening. An invite to the virtual meeting will be sent to the primary email contact of the child's Aspen account. Although we are still awaiting many details, we look forward to an open conversation with our families during which we will share processes and an overview of instructional options within the school.

Please be reminded that next week, all classes will be asynchronous in the afternoon to allow for teacher planning and preparation for reopening. Morning schedules will resume. Teachers will be sending updates in their weekly learning plan email.

We want to thank all of you for your patience through all of this!  We’ve never been more proud of our students, teachers, and families as we prepare to welcome students into our building during this unprecedented time.   #BeBatemanStrong!

Our best,

Georgia & Kate

Reopening Updates
We will continue to update our community with information and FAQs.
Newly added items will be included in this section of the Buzz.

What steps would I take if I want to switch the learning model for my child?
If you selected Learn at Home, you are unable to switch to the Hybrid-Pod Model until 4th quarter. If you selected Hybrid and would like to switch to the Learn from Home model, please email bateman@cps.edu as soon as possible to support planning.

When will I know my own child’s pod assignment, their schedule and teacher assignment?
The specific scheduling of individual students is dependent on our staff return data. The district is reviewing the staff leave requests and had projected those approvals to be communicated to us by Friday, January 15th; however, we are still awaiting determinations. We are still hopeful to communicate student schedules and pod assignments by the end of the week of January 18th to families.

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

Today was an exciting day on Richmond Street! We welcomed our preschool children and educators back to in-person learning. What a joy to hear their laughter, see their smiling eyes, and experience many of the children's first day of school at Bateman!  The collective effort of our incredible educators, responsive families, and supportive school community played an integral role in ensuring today ran smoothly. We are grateful for all who made today possible for our littlest learners to be back safely in their classrooms!

Our preschool students and staff reaffirmed what it truly means to #BeBateman and we look forward to continuing to support our community throughout the entirety the school year.

K-8 In-Person Learning Survey

Dear Bateman Families & Friends,

Our excitement for reopening and welcoming our staff and students grows each day! Earlier today, we sent an email message to the primary contact of students who have indicated Hybrid Learning when the district reopens. Included in the message is a survey for parents who have children that plan to return to In-Person (Hybrid) in February or who indicated “Hybrid” and need to change their response to “Learn at Home.” This information is critical to ensuring we have the most updated account of which students are returning and to better inform our planning process. Please complete the survey (Hybrid Learning only) by Monday, January 11, 2021. If you did not receive the survey link, please email bateman@cps.edu.

We plan to host a parent meeting for those returning for in-person learning on Wednesday, January 20th at 5:30 pm. More details to come. For more informal discussion, all are always welcome at our Latte with our Leaders, which will be Friday, January 22nd at 8:30am. Below are frequently asked questions from our community to support your own planning and expectations for the K-8 return. All of these questions will be available in a combined FAQ document for quick reference. For further reopening information, please see the CPS Online Reopening Guide.

We will continue to send information in a timely manner as we partner through this change. We welcome your feedback and look forward to our continued collaboration.

Our best,

Georgia & Kate

Georgia y Kate

Frequently Asked Questions for Reopening

How will student shifts, pods, and schedules be determined?

In order to accommodate supports for all children, students with Individual Education Plans and English Language Learners will be placed first within the schedule. These two groups of students will be offered to attend four days a week in person if space exists within their pod.

Most students will be placed in a 2 day in-person shift:

Shift A:
Monday and Tuesday
(Wednesday - Friday RemoteLearning)

Shift B:
Thursday and Friday
(Monday - Wednesday Remote Learning)

**All K-8 students will have a modified Remote Learning schedule on Wednesdays.**

Next, we will place siblings. We intend to place siblings on the same days to mitigate any challenge to family schedules.

Lastly, we will review parent survey feedback on preferences for shift assignments. We will include our Instructional Leadership Team to provide input as to which combination of students will maximize the learning environment for each pod. Please find the survey here, which is due on Monday, January 11th.

Please keep in mind with the layers of complexity of pod assignments we are unable to guarantee all preference requests. That being said, we are committed to making as few changes as possible to our classroom rosters as we know the importance of trusting relationships and classroom communities that have been established since the beginning of the school year. If any changes are needed based on the numbers, we will contact families personally to discuss the alteration prior to solidifying the move. At that time, since you originally indicated hybrid learning, you would still be able to make a change to your learning preference to "Learn at Home", if you wish.

Turno A
lunes y martes
(miércoles a viernes aprendizaje remoto)

Turno B:
jueves y viernes

-------------------------------------------------

When will I know my own child’s pod assignment, their schedule and teacher assignment?

The specific scheduling of individual students is dependent on our staff return data. The district is reviewing the staff leave requests and has projected those approvals to be communicated to us by Friday, January 15th. This means we will do our best to communicate student schedules and pod assignments the week of January 18th to families. Again, we recognize the importance of maintaining classroom communities and will try to make as few changes as possible.

What does the Learn from Home model look like?

Learn at Home is different from our current Remote Learning model. Students learning from home will have 150 minutes daily of synchronous learning through live instruction and 210 minutes of asynchronous independent learning activities. This applies to Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

-------------------------------------------------

What will the educational days look like when my child is not in person?

Wednesdays will be remote learning for all K-8 students. Approximately three hours in the morning will operate similar to how remote learning occurs now. Wednesday provides the day when all students, those in person and learn from home, will be together virtually. Three hours of asynchronous learning activities will occur in the afternoon. Teachers will utilize this afternoon time on Wednesday to plan for instruction that has three layers: in person, learn at home, and asynchronous.

Hybrid students will join the Learn at Home model the two days the opposite pod is on site. Students learning from home will have 150 minutes daily of synchronous learning through simultaneous live instruction and 210 minutes of asynchronous independent learning activities.

Message from Administration

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

Happy New Year! We hope that you had a wonderful Winter Break! As we reflect on 2020, we are proud of all that we have accomplished together educating, remaining connected, and providing a small sense of normalcy to our students in a year that has been anything but normal. We are grateful for your partnership and know that we will reach the other side of this global pandemic together.

Starting on January 11th, we will be welcoming back our PreK students whose families have chosen In-Person Learning. In preparing to reopen schools, we are hosting a Prek Parent Meeting for those children who will be returning for in-person learning on Thursday, January 7th at 5:30pm.  Our Preschool educators will be joining in the meeting to review final schedules and further details.  On February 1st, we will be welcoming back our K-8 students whose families have chosen the hybrid model. Families will be notified will be notified mid-January letting you know your child's homeroom, teacher and which days they will be attending. Please look for an email early this week which will include a survey for your final intent to return, podding details, and further information so that we can make the most informed decisions for our students. For families who have chosen to continue with remote learning, there will be some schedule changes, but we hope to make it as smooth as possible with minimal disruption.

We will continue to send information as we learn more and are able to make final decisions. Again, please check your primary email accounts regularly to stay informed and familiarize yourself with the District Reopening Online Guide.

We wish you all the best in a new year full of HOPE and know that we will continue to #BeBatemanSTRONG!

Our best,

Georgia & Kate
