Bateman Broadcast

Buenas tardes, Bateman students, parents and staff!
Today is Friday, June 19, 2020.
Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

You did it! We made it! This is one year that we will always remember and we couldn’t be more proud of our community for your model of resilience and flexibility.  Our hearts are still overflowing with happiness from seeing so many of you yesterday. Thank you for making the parade one of our favorite memories to date!

We write to you today, on Juneteenth, to celebrate the completion of our school year and the accomplishments of our students and staff while also recognizing the importance of this day amidst the recent tragedies, inspiring protests and mobilization during the past several weeks. We are committed to fostering a community of inclusivity and anti-racism and encourage you to continue doing the work in your homes through meaningful discussion. To educate your family on today’s holiday, explore these titles from Chicago Public Libraries, many of which are in the libraries of our classrooms or will be coming very soon!

Reflecting on our Year: Remote Learning Parent Survey

Thank you so much for all the work you've done at home to help your "Remote Learners" succeed through these difficult times.  We think all of our Bateman parents deserve an award! We typically send an end of the year survey for general feedback from our community; however, this year, we will focus that feedback on Remote Learning. Bateman has worked hard to craft an enriching Remote Learning program for our students.  As we consider the future and continue planning,  parent feedback is important in helping us learn how to refine and improve our practices.

Please complete the Remote Learning survey linked below and share your thoughts and opinions with us.

Shifting Focus: Planning for Next Year

As an organization and community, our focus now turns to the fall. Preparation and planning will be essential as we look towards the “reopening of schools” next year. We will continue to keep you informed as the CPS Re-entry Task Force is now beginning to analyze and discuss the District’s phased operations plan that aligns with the CDC and the Governor’s Restore Illinois Plan.

Teachers and staff collaborated to create homerooms for the upcoming school year. Please remember that there are several considerations when placing students so that our children experience equitable opportunities for learning.  Among others, some considerations include learning styles and needs, friendships, and language.  We will only be providing lists for parents via Parent Portal in mid-August. If you need assistance accessing Parent Portal on Aspen, please contact Evelyn Rivera at elrivera6@cps.edu.  Updated supply lists will be available at the beginning of July on the Bateman Website.

Please note that this will be our last Bateman Broadcast. Moving forward, we will put out information as needed via email and social media to stay connected, including back to school events, updates from the district, and fun things to do. If you are looking for an exciting challenge, check out the CPL Summer Learning Challenge!

We have appreciated all of the kind words we have received this week as we all process these times together. We are proud to serve our community and do not take the opportunity to liberate the minds of future generations for granted.

As we enjoyed watching the Bateman’s Got Talent video, our Kindergarteners singing together, and end of the year celebrations, we were reminded of our children’s gifts. It is our hope that you and your families relish the time to connect, celebrate the gifts of our children, and find many moments of joy throughout the summer!

Although there are many unknowns about the future, we look forward to seeing you as soon as possible. On behalf of the entire Bateman Family, thank you for a wonderful year, have a fantastic summer, and #BeBateman!

Warm regards,

Georgia & Kate

Virtual Field Day 2020 Activities

Wednesday, June 17, 2020

Activity #1: Rolling Bowling

This activity is designed to enjoy bowling in your home!  Set up the equipment and get ready to bowl!  You will get two rolls per person.  Be sure to add up the number of pins you knock down with your two rolls of the ball.  Each frame is two rolls, and you can have up to 10 frames.  You can roll the ball with your hand, or use your foot to kick the ball at the pins.

You will need: 10 pins and a ball!

Options for pins: water bottles, pins, plastic cups

Options for a ball: a rolled up sock, a soft ball

Points: 1 for each pin; add the total every 2 rolls, and then reset the pins

Game Time: Bowl up to 10 frames

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Rolling Bowling

Activity #2: Water Bottle Trap Game

This activity tests your accuracy and power.  This activity is similar to bowling, but you will be trying to knock down a water bottle so that it is “trapped” inside the basket.  Place one side of the laundry basket on top of the water bottle (the bottle should be standing up).  Create a line 5-10 feet away from the basket, and you will roll the ball from there while trying to knock down the bottle.

You will need: one water bottle, one basket, one ball

Options for a ball: a ball, rolled up socks

Points: 3 points if the ball and bottle are under the laundry basket; 2 points if only the water bottle is under the basket; 1 point if only the ball is under the basket; 0 points if nothing is under the basket

Game Time: Roll as many times as you can in one minute and add up your points as you go!

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Water Bottle Trap Game

Activity #3: Table Top Hockey

Get ready for a 1 on 1 hockey battle!  This activity is like playing an air hockey game.  You will need a partner for this activity.  Set up your playing area and drop the puck!

You will need: A smooth playing surface, 2 large towels, 2 hockey paddles, 1 puck

Options for towels: anything that can be used to create two, solid boundary lines for the playing area

Options for playing surface: a smooth table, a desk, the floor

Options for hockey paddles: plastic cups, use your hand

Options for a hockey puck: crumble up a piece of paper, a water bottle cap, a container lid, a plastic puck, a tennis ball

Game Time: play a timed game, play up to 5 and start again, it is up to you!

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Table Top Hockey

Activity #4: Paper Plane Toss

Test your paper plane making abilities!  You will make a paper airplane and see how well it flies!  After you make your airplane, set up a line 5-10 feet away from a laundry basket.  Your goal is to make the plane into the basket.

You will need: a paper airplane, a laundry basket

Options for a paper airplane: a balled up piece of paper, a paper airplane, a foam ball/object

Points: 2 points if you make it in the basket; 1 point if you hit the basket; 0 points if you miss the basket

Game Time: Complete as many rounds as you would like, taking 3 turns per round and adding up your points; you can also complete a timed-challenge and see how many points you can get in a minute; challenge someone to complete the activity with you!

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Paper Plane Toss

Activity #5: Speed Stack Challenge

How fast can you stack your cups and take them down?!  Place a stack of 10 cups on a table.  When you are ready, start to take them and stack them in a pyramid shape (4-3-2-1 on top), and then quickly put the cups back in one stack of 10 cups.  See how fast you can do this, or even challenge someone else to a timed challenge!

You will need: 10 cups

Options for cups: paper cups, foam cups, plastic cups

Game Time: Complete this challenge as many times as you would like and record your fastest time!

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Speed Stack Challenge

Activity #6: Pillow Balance Relay

In this activity, you will test your balancing skills as you balance a pillow on your head and move quickly to bring objects back to the starting line.  You will place 5 items about 10 feet away from you.  When you are ready, start your timer and move as fast as you can while bringing one item at a time back to the starting point. After you bring all 5 back, record your time.  Every time the pillow falls off of your head, you place it back on your head and continue.

You will need: 1 pillow, 5 easily moved objects/cups, a timer

Options for objects: paper cups, water bottles, sports balls, anything that is light and easy to move

Game Time: start and stop your timer according to the directions above; challenge a family member or a friend; add a second pillow to make it more challenging; add 5 seconds to your time every time the pillow falls off of your head

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Pillow Balance Relay

Activity #7: Plank Jack Challenge

This activity will definitely get your heart rate up!  First, set up 3 pillows or other objects on the floor in front of you.  You will then complete 5 jumping jacks.  Next, go into plank position.  From this position, you will reach and touch all three objects, one object at a time, while touching with the left and then right hand.  After you touch each object with both hands, you stand up and count a repetition.  You are trying to do as many repetitions as you can in one minute.

You will need: a timer, 3 objects to place on the floor

Options for objects: pillows, water bottles, balls, shoes

Game Time: complete as many repetitions as you can in one minute; try beating your score each time you try the challenge; challenge a friend or family member to the challenge

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Plank Jack Challenge

Activity #8: Egg Relay Race

On your mark, get set, GO!  This challenge tests your quickness and balancing skills.  You will use a spoon to balance an egg or ball as you move as fast as you can from one cone to the other and back.  You have to balance the spoon and egg without holding the egg with your other hand.  You can time yourself to see how fast you can go, or you can challenge someone to a race!  The winner must have the egg or ball balanced on the spoon.

You will need: 2 cones, an egg or small ball, a spoon, a timer

Options for the egg: a real egg, a plastic egg, a small ball

Options for cones: cones, shoes, anything you can use to mark two spots to run back and forth between

Game Time: This activity can be completed by yourself as a timed activity, as a race against another person, or as a race between two small teams

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Egg Relay Race

Activity #9: Washcloth Relay

This activity is another speed challenge!  The challenge is to move all of the water from one cup to another cup by using a sponge to carry the water.  To set up this challenge, you place one cup full of water at the starting point, and at least 10 feet away you place a second cup that is empty.  Players start with a dry washcloth or sponge.  When the timer starts, soak your washcloth or sponge into the water, run to the other cup, and squeeze the water into that cup.  Return to the first cup and continue to move the water by soaking the washcloth with water and squeezing it into the other cup. Continue doing this until all of the water from the first cup has been moved into the second cup.

You will need: 2 cups, glasses, or bowls; a sponge or washcloth, a timer

Game Time: This activity can be completed on your own, or you can set up another set of cups and water and compete against another person.

Gracias,
Georgia Davos and Kate Kloepper

Dear 8th Grade Parents,

Can you believe that your child(ren) are going to graduate in just a few weeks? Where has the time gone? We’re sure it feels like yesterday that you were bringing them to Bateman for their first day of Kindergarten!

We are increasingly proud of how the 8th Graders have handled themselves with the many challenges this year has delivered. They have matured, grown in their decision making abilities, and demonstrated great positivity and perseverance during Remote Learning.

While we wish we could all honor the achievements of our 8th graders together, we would like to inform you of plans that are within the district guidelines. Please read the details below carefully.

Bateman has been very busy developing a plan that will allow students to pick up items for graduation and drop off school items and materials. Students will be given caps & gowns, their class composite graduation picture, items from their lockers, and front yard signs!
Caps and gowns will not be provided to students who have not completed any remote learning. Students will need to complete remote learning assignments prior to coming on Friday. Please reach out to the 8th grade teachers to retrieve assignments.
To pick up your child’s cap and gown, please follow the time frames below according to Homeroom. Guardians must come to Door 4 to pick up their child’s cap and gown wearing appropriate protection. We will be using social distancing measures similar to chromebook distribution.

Graduation Events
  1. Virtual Graduation:
June 12, 2020 Online

Within the guidelines provided by Chicago Public Schools, we will be offering a pre-recorded video that will be posted on the Bateman Website the morning of June 12th. This is for your family to view together and celebrate within the safety of your own homes.
  1. Drive-Through 8th Grade Ceremony
June 12, 2020 at designated times by Homeroom

We will be hosting our first ever 8th Grade Graduation Drive-Through! Since this is the first time Bateman has created a plan like this, we are looking for the support of our students and our parents. Due to the large number of students, we must follow some strict guidelines set forth by Chicago Public Schools, Illinois Department of Health, and the Illinois State Board of Education.  With that being said, we are asking families to come in vehicles so that we can accommodate in our plans. Please be mindful and considerate of others during this ceremony as we want everyone to be able to safely celebrate our student’s accomplishments.
Vehicle Lineup (By Homeroom) - Please adhere to your designated time.
  • Room 228: 10:00 a.m.
  • Room 314: 11:00 a.m.
  • Room 316: 12:00 p.m.
  • Room 318:  1:00 p.m.
Procedures of Graduation:
  1. All vehicles will enter the staff parking lot via Sacramento Ave. There will be a sign and a security guard indicating where to enter.
  2. Vehicles will drive up to a designated area in front of the auditorium doors.
  3. Graduates and passengers will be able to exit the vehicle. Family members must remain by the vehicle to take pictures. There will be a barrier to mark a line separating where the graduate may pass and family members must stay. Only graduates may approach the auditorium steps.
  4. Graduates must be masked and will proceed to a marked area on the auditorium stairwell. We will provide graduates their diploma and families will be given the chance to take a picture from their vehicles.
  5. Graduates will also receive their records and diplomas.
  6. Graduate returns to the vehicle and then proceeds to the exit.
  7. The school building is closed. No one is allowed on the school property.
  8. Group photos, small group ceremonies or events where students meet at the school or other locations to take a photo will not be allowed.

Thank you for reviewing our end of year plan.  We are excited to see all of our students and families one last time before they move on to High School. We are so very proud of them and wish them the best. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your graduate’s school counselor, Sandra Rivera (slrivera2@cps.edu) or email us at bateman@cps.edu.

Thank you,
Georgia Davos and Kate Kloepper

  • Salón 228: 10:00 a.m.
  • Salón 314: 11:00 a.m.
  • Salón 316: 12:00 p.m.
  • Salón 318:  1:00 p.m.
Procedimientos de graduación:

Gracias,
Georgia Davos and Kate Kloepper
