Virtual Field Day 2020 Activities

Activity #1: Rolling Bowling

This activity is designed to enjoy bowling in your home!  Set up the equipment and get ready to bowl!  You will get two rolls per person.  Be sure to add up the number of pins you knock down with your two rolls of the ball.  Each frame is two rolls, and you can have up to 10 frames.  You can roll the ball with your hand, or use your foot to kick the ball at the pins.

You will need: 10 pins and a ball!

Options for pins: water bottles, pins, plastic cups

Options for a ball: a rolled up sock, a soft ball

Points: 1 for each pin; add the total every 2 rolls, and then reset the pins

Game Time: Bowl up to 10 frames

Activity #2: Water Bottle Trap Game

This activity tests your accuracy and power.  This activity is similar to bowling, but you will be trying to knock down a water bottle so that it is “trapped” inside the basket.  Place one side of the laundry basket on top of the water bottle (the bottle should be standing up).  Create a line 5-10 feet away from the basket, and you will roll the ball from there while trying to knock down the bottle.

You will need: one water bottle, one basket, one ball

Options for a ball: a ball, rolled up socks

Points: 3 points if the ball and bottle are under the laundry basket; 2 points if only the water bottle is under the basket; 1 point if only the ball is under the basket; 0 points if nothing is under the basket

Game Time: Roll as many times as you can in one minute and add up your points as you go!

Activity #3: Table Top Hockey

Get ready for a 1 on 1 hockey battle!  This activity is like playing an air hockey game.  You will need a partner for this activity.  Set up your playing area and drop the puck!

You will need: A smooth playing surface, 2 large towels, 2 hockey paddles, 1 puck

Options for towels: anything that can be used to create two, solid boundary lines for the playing area

Options for playing surface: a smooth table, a desk, the floor

Options for hockey paddles: plastic cups, use your hand

Options for a hockey puck: crumble up a piece of paper, a water bottle cap, a container lid, a plastic puck, a tennis ball

Game Time: play a timed game, play up to 5 and start again, it is up to you!

Activity #4: Paper Plane Toss

Test your paper plane making abilities!  You will make a paper airplane and see how well it flies!  After you make your airplane, set up a line 5-10 feet away from a laundry basket.  Your goal is to make the plane into the basket.

You will need: a paper airplane, a laundry basket

Options for a paper airplane: a balled up piece of paper, a paper airplane, a foam ball/object

Points: 2 points if you make it in the basket; 1 point if you hit the basket; 0 points if you miss the basket

Game Time: Complete as many rounds as you would like, taking 3 turns per round and adding up your points; you can also complete a timed-challenge and see how many points you can get in a minute; challenge someone to complete the activity with you!

Activity #5: Speed Stack Challenge

How fast can you stack your cups and take them down?!  Place a stack of 10 cups on a table.  When you are ready, start to take them and stack them in a pyramid shape (4-3-2-1 on top), and then quickly put the cups back in one stack of 10 cups.  See how fast you can do this, or even challenge someone else to a timed challenge!

You will need: 10 cups

Options for cups: paper cups, foam cups, plastic cups

Game Time: Complete this challenge as many times as you would like and record your fastest time!

Activity #6: Pillow Balance Relay

In this activity, you will test your balancing skills as you balance a pillow on your head and move quickly to bring objects back to the starting line.  You will place 5 items about 10 feet away from you.  When you are ready, start your timer and move as fast as you can while bringing one item at a time back to the starting point. After you bring all 5 back, record your time.  Every time the pillow falls off of your head, you place it back on your head and continue.

You will need: 1 pillow, 5 easily moved objects/cups, a timer

Options for objects: paper cups, water bottles, sports balls, anything that is light and easy to move

Game Time: start and stop your timer according to the directions above; challenge a family member or a friend; add a second pillow to make it more challenging; add 5 seconds to your time every time the pillow falls off of your head

Activity #7: Plank Jack Challenge

This activity will definitely get your heart rate up!  First, set up 3 pillows or other objects on the floor in front of you.  You will then complete 5 jumping jacks.  Next, go into plank position.  From this position, you will reach and touch all three objects, one object at a time, while touching with the left and then right hand.  After you touch each object with both hands, you stand up and count a repetition.  You are trying to do as many repetitions as you can in one minute.

You will need: a timer, 3 objects to place on the floor

Options for objects: pillows, water bottles, balls, shoes

Game Time: complete as many repetitions as you can in one minute; try beating your score each time you try the challenge; challenge a friend or family member to the challenge

VIDEO DEMONSTRATION: Plank Jack Challenge

Activity #8: Egg Relay Race

On your mark, get set, GO!  This challenge tests your quickness and balancing skills.  You will use a spoon to balance an egg or ball as you move as fast as you can from one cone to the other and back.  You have to balance the spoon and egg without holding the egg with your other hand.  You can time yourself to see how fast you can go, or you can challenge someone to a race!  The winner must have the egg or ball balanced on the spoon.

You will need: 2 cones, an egg or small ball, a spoon, a timer

Options for the egg: a real egg, a plastic egg, a small ball

Options for cones: cones, shoes, anything you can use to mark two spots to run back and forth between

Game Time: This activity can be completed by yourself as a timed activity, as a race against another person, or as a race between two small teams

Activity #9: Washcloth Relay

This activity is another speed challenge!  The challenge is to move all of the water from one cup to another cup by using a sponge to carry the water.  To set up this challenge, you place one cup full of water at the starting point, and at least 10 feet away you place a second cup that is empty.  Players start with a dry washcloth or sponge.  When the timer starts, soak your washcloth or sponge into the water, run to the other cup, and squeeze the water into that cup.  Return to the first cup and continue to move the water by soaking the washcloth with water and squeezing it into the other cup. Continue doing this until all of the water from the first cup has been moved into the second cup.

You will need: 2 cups, glasses, or bowls; a sponge or washcloth, a timer

Game Time: This activity can be completed on your own, or you can set up another set of cups and water and compete against another person.
