Message from Administration

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

We are so excited to announce that Bateman has been selected to be a 21st century community learning centers grant recipient through our community partner, North River Commission.  The 21st CCLC grant is a federally funded grant dedicated exclusively to supporting after-school, before-school and summer learning programs on a year-round basis. This grant will provide Bateman $150,000 per year of student and family programming for the next five years.  The opportunities this grant will afford the Bateman community is endless.  We want to thank the North River Commission, as they are such a valuable partner in helping us to improve the experiences allotted to our children at Bateman.  Find more information regarding the 21st Century Grant, visit the US Department of Education website.

When witches go riding, and black cats are seen, the moon laughs and whispers, ‘tis near Halloween!  Our priority is always for the safety of our students and school community.  That being said,  per the recommendation of the Mayor’s office and considering the safety of the Bateman community, we will be canceling the Halloween Parade. In lieu of the parade, the teachers are planning something extra special for our students to celebrate together and we will be hosting a Virtual Halloween parade!  Please opt in to participating in our Virtual Halloween Parade by submitting a picture or video to the Halloween Parade Flip Grid! We will be sharing the final video Friday afternoon for all to share in the fun, see all of our students’ costumes, or however your family celebrates this time of year! Please submit your entry to the virtual parade by 3pm on Thursday, October 29th to be included in the video.

To those who celebrate, have a spook-tacular, boo-tiful, wooo-nderful, and fang-tastic Halloween and don’t forget to set your clocks back an hour on Sunday, November 1st!

Thank you for all you continue to do to #BeBatemanSTRONG!

Our best,

Georgia and Kate

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

On Friday, October 16th, Chicago Public Schools released information regarding the updated Reopening Plan for Quarter 2. Kindergarten-8th grade students will remain learning remotely. Pre-Kindergarten students will launch learning on site, in person. We offer four PK classrooms at Bateman, all of which are included in the Chicago Early Learning Program. We will plan and collaborate with our PK team to set up this new learning model, safely. PK families, the district will be reaching out to you directly to indicate if you plan to send your child to school in person or select to opt-out of in person.

We will be hosting a Preschool Parent Forum on Thursday, October 22nd at 6:00pm to provide further details and respond to inquiries to the best of our ability at this time. We are asking that only preschool parents attend this meeting, as they are directly impacted by the news shared by the district. Please click here if you would like to attend the forum.

Please view the letter from the District in English & Spanish and learn more about the Quarter 2 Reopening Plan to remain informed.

Thank you for all you continue to do to #BeBatemanSTRONG!

Go CPS Now Open!
Monday, October 12th at 9am

The GoCPS application period for the 2021-22 school year opens at 9 a.m. on October 12, 2020, and closes on December 11, 2020, at 11:59 p.m.  During this period, families can submit an application, select and rank programs and schools, and schedule any required admissions screenings, if applicable (i.e., admissions exams, auditions, information sessions, and interviews). This includes all perspective families that are outside of the Bateman Boundaries entering Kindergarten - Eighth Grade for the 2021-2022 School Year.

CPS will use spring 2019 test scores to determine tiers for 8th Graders.
During the selection process for selective enrollment and magnet schools, CPS considers each applicant’s “tier.”  Find specific details on how CPS uses tiers during the selection process here.

Tiers are determined by five socioeconomic characteristics of a child’s address and test scores from their neighborhood schools. In these calculations, CPS typically uses NWEA MAP scores from the previous spring semester. However, because the NWEA MAP was not administered to CPS students in spring 2020, CPS will use spring 2019 NWEA MAP scores instead to update the 2021-22 tiers before the GoCPS application opens on October 12.

Message from Administration

Dear Bateman Families & Friends,

We hope you are all well and enjoying the beautiful new colors of fall that have blanketed our city!

Over the past several years, one of our instructional foci within our CIWP Curriculum & Instruction Priority has been making learning relevant to the students we see in front of us each year! We are incredibly proud of the immense reflection and revision our educators practice each year to ensure that themes, lessons, and mentor texts represent relevant events, as well as the cultures, languages, family structures, and practices of the students in their classrooms. In an effort to be inclusive, our school strives to reach the highest level of Banks Theory of Multicultural Reform, in which celebrations of cultures and language occur often and are integrated naturally on a daily basis. Some of the ways our teachers have been infusing Hispanic Heritage Month in daily lessons include the following:

  • Mentor Texts and Read Alouds featuring Latinx Authors and Honorable Characters
  • Highlighting Latinx community contributors and reading articles featuring their work
  • Singing Songs and Welcoming one another in a multitude of languages
  • And Much More!
We will continue to spotlight our classrooms as we celebrate the rich cultures of our school community. Below is a poem from 7th grade in analyzing identity and uncovering imagery!

Thank you for all you continue to do to #BeBatemanSTRONG!

Warmly,

Georgia and Kate

Supporting Our Families
**LAST WEEK TO COMPLETE FORM**

The pandemic has impacted families on multiple levels. As one school community, we are encouraged by the amount of families that have reached out to support one another. Since we cannot see one another on a daily basis at drop offs and pick ups, it is important for open communication, especially when families are in need of support. Please indicate whether your family is in need of support or if you are a family who can provide support. Further information and next steps will be forthcoming once we receive sufficient responses from families.
