Student COVID-19 Testing Update
BATEMAN WEBSITE   | TRADUCIR ESTA PAGINA  |   TEACHER WEBSITES   |  CONTACT US

September 30, 2021

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

CPS has partnered with Thermo Fisher to offer free, regular testing to students and staff for COVID-19. Regular testing means that testing is offered to everyone on a weekly basis, even if they don’t have symptoms of COVID-19. We received notification yesterday evening that our school will begin weekly CPS COVID-19 Testing tomorrow, Friday, October 1, 2021.

Staff will be on site from 9am - 3:15pm in the Care Room (former music room) to provide the weekly testing for our students who have registered. If you have previously registered, please do not re-register. If you have not previously registered and would like for your child to participate in the weekly COVID-19 Testing, please click the Color Health Registration Link to register for student(s). This process provides consent for your child to participate weekly - you will not need to re-consent each time. If you would prefer that your child NOT participate, there are no action steps at this time. Only students who have registered with parent consent will be tested.

Students who have consent and who are asymptomatic will be escorted to the Care Room and given a PCR COVID-19 test. The test will involve a nasal swab, which gently touches the inner part of the lower nostril. There will be medical personnel on site to supervise swabbing and support students if needed. Positive results will be shared with the principal at the school so we understand why the child is going home and can put in place classroom coverage along with the communications protocol as needed. Results of the PCR test are shared with the person who tested, the district for contact tracing purposes, and state health authorities as required by law.

For more information regarding the weekly COVID-19 Testing procedures, please visit the CPS COVID Testing FAQs Page.

Warm regards,

Ms. Davos and Ms. Kloepper

Sra. Davos y Sra. Kloepper

Bateman Assessment Update

9/27/2021

*|MC_PREVIEW_TEXT|*
BATEMAN WEBSITE   | TRADUCIR ESTA PAGINA  |   TEACHER WEBSITES   |   CONTACT US

September 24, 2021

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

The beginning of the school year provides many exciting opportunities as we get acquainted with new mixtures of students in their homerooms. Our educators have the privilege of serving our students based on their individual and unique needs and are only able to do so because of the immense details they learn about each child. A child’s teacher can name long lists of favorites, families, fun memories, and difficult moments at the drop of a hat. Our educators also have a profound understanding of each child’s academic strengths and areas of growth. It is through this strong foundation that our teachers are able to create lasting relationships full of trust and growth.

Beginning September 27th, each child will have scheduled times to demonstrate their current academic performance. Educators will take time to analyze the data to best inform their instruction in a variety of ways. Goals of each assessment analysis include:

  • Shifting Tier 1 Core Lessons that all students receive so that all students are engaged, supported, and challenged

  • Differentiating instruction for guided groups for individualized progress through both a supportive and enrichment lens

  • Determining students who require strategic, tiered supports

This year, the Bateman Assessment Plan includes a few updates from previous years due to the District’s nonrenewal with NWEA for Grades 3-8.  Students in Kindergarten - 2nd Grade will continue to take the Math NWEA MAP Assessment.

  • Kindergarten: Monday, September 27th

  • 1st Grade: Tuesday, October 5th

  • 2nd Grade: Tuesday, October 5th

The Star360 is the District’s new platform for benchmark assessments for students in third through eighth grade. This is a timed test that is available in both English and Spanish. Students will take the assessment in their language of instruction for both Reading and Math and should be able to complete each assessment within one hour. All students who receive testing accommodations will be scheduled accordingly. More information regarding Star360 is included in the Renaissance Learning Star360 FAQs Document.

Teachers will notify families of both the testing day and will share data outcomes and goals from BAS Reading Assessments (K-4), Math MAP (K-2) and Star360 during the week of October 4th. For our assessment philosophy and more, please visit the Bateman Website.

Thank you for your partnership in this work as we learn even more about our students’ instructional strengths.

Warmly,

Ms. Davos & Ms. Kloepper

Calurosamente,

Sra. Davos y Sra. Kloepper

Message from Administration

Dear Bateman Family,

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! At Bateman, we truly believe that the diversity of our school community is at the heart of creating a special experience for our students. We prioritize the celebration of all our cultures throughout the entire year and emphasize lessons and texts that highlight the cultures represented in our school.  Some of our students have engaged in songs and dances from the Latinx community - check them out below!

We’ve had three great weeks of learning! Thank you for your partnership as we continue to navigate this time together. As much as our vaccinated community continues to be cautious, COVID-19 cases can occur, and we will work through all of the protocols and procedures together. Thank you to all of our families for monitoring symptoms and keeping us informed about positive cases.

As a reminder, if you have not yet completed the Health Screener Attestation Form, please do so immediately. All parents must complete a daily health screener prior to sending children to school. If they are exhibiting anyCOVID-19 symptoms they must stay home for the day.

A few reminders:

  • School Pictures: Let's see those smiles, Bateman! Please make sure your children come to school tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 21st, ready to pose for their school pictures!

  • Virtual Curriculum Night:  While it’s unfortunate that we aren’t all able to meet in person under normal circumstances, our educators are excited to share a little bit about themselves and their plans for the coming year.  Bateman’s curriculum is something we are all very proud of and excited to share with you.  The Virtual Curriculum Night will be live at 5:30 pm.  Links will be shared via email from your child’ teacher.

  • Community Safety: We have had several meetings with community organizations and the Alderwoman’s office regarding keeping our community safe. We plan to host the first Public Safety Forum at which we will present a few ideas to continue improving safety measures that impact our children. Stay tuned for further updates.

  • Blaze Ways: We have officially begun our annual Blaze Ways campaign! Our first rally was held today (virtually) to encourage our community to Be Safe, Respectful and Responsible (how we choose to act) and to Be Empowered, Inclusive, and Kind (who we are and what we stand for!). Ask your child what they learned from the rally today!

If there is one thing that Bateman is known for...providing support!  Please don’t hesitate to reach out for help through our teaching staff if and when the need arises. Remaining connected and accessing the many resources in our community is a strength.

Thank you for your continued support.

Warm regards,

Ms. Davos & Ms. Kloepper

Message from Administration

Dear Bateman Family,

It has been so exciting to kick off the 2021-22 School Year last week! Thank you for your partnership as we continue to navigate education during this global pandemic. Our students did a fantastic job and our staff’s significant efforts generated an inclusive, welcoming environment to begin the year.

Thank you for your understanding and ongoing cooperation with our COVID-19 prevention policies and procedures to help protect our children, our families, and our staff and their families. We will continue to enforce safe practices to prevent, promptly identify, and respond to potential COVID-19 cases. We have received several questions regarding individual circumstances and have categorized the concerns to address common questions below.

COVID-19 Protocol Reminders
Please be reminded that if you do receive a positive test result, it is imperative that you report the positive results to the Office of Student Health & Wellness or call 773-553-KIDS. Only self-reported cases will indicate the need for next steps in our district. Transparency is key to ensuring all of our students remain safe.

2021-22 Opening of School Plans: The CPS external guidance will continue to be updated on SY22 External Guidance: Parents, Educators, and Partners as this year unfolds. Please review the varying scenarios:

Children with Symptoms at Home

If….

  • A child is sick with any COVID-19 symptoms (Fever 100.4 or higher, chills, cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell, new muscle or body aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, runny nose or congestion, fatigue)

Then…

  • Call your child’s healthcare provider

  • Get child tested for COVID-19 and stay home while awaiting results

  • Inform your childs’ teachers of any absence and complete an absence note

  • Negative COVID-19 results:

    • Stay home until illness is over

    • Symptoms have steadily improved

    • Fever free for 24 hrs without medication

    • No uncontrollable cough

    • No vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hrs

    • Siblings should stay home until a negative test result or alternative diagnosis is received for the symptomatic child.

  • Positive COVID results:

    • The student must isolate for 10 days from start of illness

    • Non fully vaccinated household members (siblings, etc.) must quarantine 14 days from the date of last contact or end of student’s isolation)

Child/Staff  Exhibits Symptoms During School
Please reference the Sick Student Guide for Families

If…

  • A child or staff member exhibits COVID-like symptoms at school, including a Fever (100.4°F or higher), New onset of moderate to severe headache, Shortness of breath, New cough, Sore throat, Vomiting, Diarrhea, New loss of sense of taste or smell, Fatigue from unknown cause, Muscle or body aches from unknown cause

Then…

  • Students and staff MUST remain home from school for at least 10 days AND improvement of symptoms OR until they receive negative test results OR alternative diagnosis. Siblings should stay home until a negative test result or alternative diagnosis is received for the symptomatic child.

    • If negative, they can return to school following a negative test:

      • At a minimum, the individual must be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication and have had no diarrhea or vomiting in the previous 24 hours. Other diseases have specific criteria for when a student or staff member can return to school.

      • A doctor’s note documenting the alternative diagnosis or a negative COVID-19 test result should accompany a student or staff member returning to school with an alternative diagnosis after experiencing COVID-like symptoms.

    • If diagnosed with an alternative diagnosis, they must meet the criteria for returning to school for the illness with which they have been diagnosed. A doctor’s note must accompany the child to return to school.

    • If positive, please report their results to the Office of Student Health and Wellness cps.edu/COVIDresults.

    • If they do not test, they must stay home for 10 days from the onset of symptoms AND for 24 hours (without fever reducing medication) AND improvement of symptoms.

  • All students and staff sent home with COVID-like symptoms should be sent home and isolated until they are diagnostically tested.

  • Vaccination status does not impact those experiencing COVID-like symptoms. Those experiencing COVID-like symptoms must stay home and get tested regardless of vaccination status.

COVID-19 Close Contact at Home
COVID-19 Protocol for Families | Protocolo COVID-19 para familias

If…

  • Someone (household member, friend, or visitor) that the student was in close contact with has tested positive.

Then…

  • Entire household must quarantine for 14 days from the last date of exposure.

  • Testing is encouraged between 3-5 days after the last date of exposure.

  • COVID-19 positive person must isolate for 10 days from start of the illness (or 10 days from the date of test if no symptoms)

  • Fully vaccinated household members who are not experiencing symptoms do not need to quarantine. It is recommended that they be tested 3-5 days after the last day of exposure

COVID-19 Positive Exposure in Classroom
CPS Protocol for Positive Case | CPS Protocolo para un Caso Positivo
How does contact tracing work? | ¿Cómo funciona el rastreo de contactos?

If…

  • A child or staff member tests positive for COVID-19

Then…

  • It is imperative that the parent report the positive case to CPS at cps.edu/covidresults so that the contact tracing can begin

  • When a confirmed or probable case of COVID-19 is identified in school, the CPS contact tracing team will determine if the individual was in the building while contagious and establish who were close contacts

  • After completing an interview with the individual who tested positive and reviewing entrance logs of the school, the contact tracing team will notify any individuals who were identified as close contact of the need to quarantine for 10 days and will be provided a return to school date

  • Quarantined students will be provided chromebooks for remote instruction

  • The school will send a notification informing the community when a confirmed case was present in the building

  • Siblings of students in different classrooms are considered secondary exposure and will not be required to quarantine

Domestic Travel
CPS Travel Guidance

If…

  • A family decides to travel and is returning from a high-risk (orange) state

Then…

  • Get tested with a viral test 3-5 days after travel AND stay home and self-quarantine for a full 7 days.

  • Even if you test negative, stay home and self-quarantine for the full 7 days.

  • If you don’t get tested, stay home and self-quarantine for 10 days after travel.

  • Fully vaccinated travelers are not required to quarantine if they are asymptomatic and fully vaccinated. They must monitor their health for 14 days after travel and if they experience symptoms potentially consistent with COVID-19, they must self-isolate until clinical evaluation and COVID testing.

Instructional Support for COVID-19 Quarantined Students: Students under a COVID-19 quarantine (not including for travel) will be provided a connection to their classes through a combination of live-streamed broadcasts of their classes and access to materials and lessons through our learning management systems (Seesaw and/or Google Classroom). As our teachers focus on the students within their classes, instructional support for COVID-19 Quarantined Students will differ from previous hybrid and remote learning and look different for various grade levels. Staff will need 24-hours’ notice to post Zoom links and organize materials/chromebooks that will be available for students at door #4.

As a reminder, you should have received a copy of the Health Screener Attestation Form yesterday in your child’s backpack. It is imperative that you sign and return the form by Friday, September 10th. All parents must complete a daily health screener prior to sending children to school. If they are exhibiting anyCOVID-19 symptoms they must stay home for the day.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out for help with any of this information. We are here to help navigate through all of this together.

Thank you for your continued support.

Warm regards,

Ms. Davos & Ms. Kloepper

Health Screener Attestation Form
Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

Congratulations! We have officially completed the first week of school! This has been a start of the year like no other but we could not be more proud of our students, staff, and community for their tremendous commitment to being Bateman Strong. Official Bateman Buzz emails will go into regular cadence next week - we promise not to continue emailing you each day.

In place of the daily electronic health screener, parents and guardians will be required to submit a quarterly attestation form in which they agree to perform a daily health check of their student before sending them to school. The Quarter 1 attestation form is due on Friday, September 10th. It will be going home with your child Tuesday in their backpacks. Click here to print and sign the form.

Our big ask: if your child is sick, please do not send them to school. Once at school, if they have COVID-19 symptoms they will be required to isolate in the Care Room. If a child is brought to the Care Room, parents will need to provide a Negative COVID-19 test result to return to school.

We are here in partnership to support all of our families and know this year is going to keep getting better and better!

Our very best,
Georgia and Kate
Student COVID-19 Testing

Dear Bateman Parent/Guardian,

Welcome back to an exciting and promising school year! As part of the district’s efforts to ensure the safety of our students, we are partnering with Thermo Fisher Scientific and Color Health to provide all students with COVID-19 testing beginning September 1, 2021 for the school year through the ReadyCheckGo™ testing program.

If you are interested in having your child participate in testing, please follow this link: https://home.color.com/covid/sign-up/start?partner=tf-bat-609792-students and complete the registration process. A parent or guardian must register any minor under 18 years old, and you’ll give a one-time consent and HIPAA authorization to share your child’s results with the school and district.

Testing is optional for students, except for unvaccinated and partially vaccinated student athletes. Testing will take place during regular school hours and results will be available in 24 to 48 hours. Color Health will follow up with you directly if your child receives a positive result.

For more information on testing with Thermo Fisher and Color, including self-swab testing and receiving results, head to their Support FAQs or call 888-603-1028. You may also email the CPS COVID-19 Testing Team at covidtestingcps@cps.edu.

Thank you for your participation to keep our school community safe and healthy.

Reported Gunshots around Vicinity of Bateman

September 2, 2021

Dear Bateman Families,

The safety of our students is our top priority. We are writing to share information regarding an incident that took place near our school this morning.

It was brought to our attention that at approximately 9:45 a.m., there were reports of shots fired in the immediate vicinity of the school.  There were some students outside at the time for recess and all were immediately brought inside.  All students are safe and will remain inside the building out of an abundance of caution for the duration of the day, including lunch and recess. We followed CPS protocol and alerted the Chicago Police Department and CPS’ Office of Safety and Security.

The majority of our students are most likely unaware that the incident took place during their instructional day, however, our counselor and social worker have met with all classrooms that were outside and are available to fully support all students who have been impacted by this incident. Teachers have been notified to contact the administration team should any student show signs of distress to provide immediate support.

Extra security will be available this afternoon to ensure a smooth and safe dismissal for all students. Dismissal will proceed as normal. CPD will also provide additional presence for the remainder of the day.

We are working closely with CPS, the Chicago Police Department and the Alderman on this matter. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school directly at 773-534-5055 or by email at bateman@cps.edu.

Sincerely,

Georgia Davos-Vetas

Principal, Bateman Elementary

Kate Kloepper

Asst. Principal, Bateman Elementary

Atentamente,

Georgia Davos-Vetas
