Bateman Band Members Excel at the Solo and Ensemble Festival

This past weekend, Bateman had 11 students who attended the Solo and Ensemble Festival on Saturday, February 23rd at Westinghouse College Prep. Each student spent 2 months preparing a solo and presented it in front of an adjudicator. Along with a solo, they were also required to play scales and sight read to be awarded a ranking.

Congratulations to Laisha A., Stefany B., Ixchel G., Alice C., Olivia M., Stella M., Hannah P., Grace G., Giada A., Harrison M., Luis A. who all performed at the Solo and Ensemble Festival! We had 11 students prepare solos to be performed in front of a judge Saturday morning. We had 1 student receive a Bronze ranking, 4 students receive silver rankings, 5 students receive gold ranking and 1 student receive a near perfect score getting an Honor Superior ranking! They all did a fabulous job!

Bateman 7th Graders Prepare for Election Season

2/7/2019

Picture
In 2015, only 33% of registered voters in Chicago voted in the election for mayor and alderman. The 7th graders at Bateman are trying to change that in 2019. Bateman is one of 15 schools working with the CPS Department of Social Science and Civic Engagement to have middle school students increase voter turnout. Instead of focusing primarily on the federal government through their constitutional studies, the 7th graders will learn about the role of local government and the impact that individuals can have on the election process. The goal of our action plan is to increase voter turnout in the 33rd Ward. This is also supports the work at Bateman to further Social and Emotional Learning by facilitating student empowerment.

The initial focus will be on the aldermanic race. First, the students explored how the city government affects their own lives, the lives of their family, and the community. Then, students designed and took a survey to identify their top five concerns. Next, they will draft questions about these topics and ask the three candidates for alderman to answer them. The students will work to share information about the candidates' positions on these issues with the community. The students hope that greater voter awareness on these issues will increase voter turnout in our ward. The process will be repeated with the two mayoral candidates if there is a run-off election.

Message from the Principal
Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

It was great to have everyone back today!  The polar vortex coudn't stop our amazing students from Being Bateman!

We have some exciting announcements to share with you.

Our teachers have been hard at work with their data deep dives and curriculum planning sessions.  They have analyzed mid-year assessment data to strategically plan and support student learning outcomes. This analysis and planning will benefit our students as we enter the 2nd semester of the school year.   We look forward to great student academic growth!

On Wednesday, February 6th, our K-5 students will be participating in our annual mid-year Blaze Ways assembly.  Our assemblies always focus on positive SEL skills that the students can use on a daily basis.  This year, the students will be going on a journey with Mr. Blaze Ways as he learns how to identify his feelings. Make sure to ask your child(ren) about all the different ways they learn to identify and address their feelings.

As always, please be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to see daily updates of all the exciting things happening at Bateman!

Have a wonderful week!

Congratulations to February's Teacher of The Month, Ms. Noonan!

2/4/2019

Picture
I am so excited to be Bateman's February Teacher of the Month! This is my second year on the 8th grade team at Bateman. Being a part of the Bateman community is an honor because the school is grounded in such strong core values.

I grew up in the northern suburbs of Chicago. I am a total home body and cannot spend time away from my family, so I attended Loyola University Chicago for my undergraduate career. Here, I double majored in Secondary Education and English with an endorsement in ESL. During my last year at Loyola I had the pleasure of student teaching at Bateman, and I knew then that this was a community I wanted to join.

The last two years I have had the honor of being the 8th grade ELA teacher. I love teaching literacy because I think it serves as such an integral part in our lives. The best feeling in the world is seeing a student truly fall in love with a book!

Outside of the classroom, I love spending time with my family. If I am not with them, I am either reading a book, eating, or spending time with my friends. I am looking forward to a wonderful second half of the school year!
