Message from Administration

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

We appreciate your patience, support and understanding during the CTU & SEIU Strike.  We have an incredible team here at Bateman who advocate for each student every single day with the child's best interest at heart.  Please help us in welcoming everyone back and show your appreciation for the work they do day in and day out.

We are thrilled to see everyone back together in the building tomorrow, Friday, November 1st - just in time to celebrate Halloween!  We will be celebrating being back in school with our Blaze Ways Celebrations, as well as our Halloween celebrations.

Please be reminded of a few procedures so we can all celebrate safely:

Only Kindergarten through 4th grade students can wear a Halloween costume to school on Friday, November 1st. All costumes must adhere to the following rules below. If a student comes with an inappropriate costume they will be sent to the office, and a parent/guardian will be called to bring a change of clothes.

Costumes cannot include any of the following:

  • Masks
  • Costumes must not demean any race, ethnicity, religion, nationality or handicapped condition, or gender
  • Tails and/or capes that reach the floor
  • Weapons (No guns, daggers, swords, or any other weapons)
  • Full-face make-up
  • Horror costumes that may be too gory, including fake blood
  • Revealing clothing (no midriffs or miniskirts)

Students who decide not to wear costumes can still dress in either Halloween- or Fall-themed attire/colors.

HALLOWEEN PARADE (K-4 ONLY)
Kindergarten through 4th Grade will be participating in a Halloween Parade starting at 1:45 pm. After the Halloween Parade, all classrooms may start their classroom festivities. Parents are invited to watch the Halloween parade (at the North Office foyer).

PARTY FOOD/SNACKS
Please make sure any snacks you bring for your child’s classroom are in accordance with the Health and Wellness Policy. Classrooms may not celebrate Halloween with candy or other non-healthy food.

Please let us know if you have any questions and we'll see everyone tomorrow at 8:05 am when doors open!

Be Empowered • Be Inclusive • Be Kind

Be Bateman!

All the best,
Georgia & Kate

Message from Administration

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

If there's one thing we are certain of, it's that the Bateman Community never ceases to come together in times of need.  We have seen many students and families coming to support our teachers, from bringing coffee and food fuel to using their own teacher voices while raising their signs outside of the building.  Your patience and support has not gone unnoticed!

We know we cannot replace our teachers, SECAs, clerks, and staff.  The work they do day in and day out is out of pure joy and commitment to each and every student at Bateman.  We hope to see everyone back in the building together very soon!

Please be reminded that classes will continue to be canceled on Thursday, October 24th due to the CTU and SEIU work stoppage.  Bateman has welcomed about 20 students each day and is open to any family in need of assistance.  District staff is here to coordinate non-instructional activities and our lunchroom staff will continue to provide breakfast, lunch, and a take home dinner.

BOOOsterfest 2019 has been postponed until Friday, November 1st from 4:30pm - 6:30pm due to the work stoppage.  We will announce any other rescheduled events as soon as we return to our normal schedule.

Please reach out to bateman@cps.edu with any questions or concerns and continue to watch the news and social media posts for current updates.  For more information regarding the CPS Contingency Plan, please click on the image below in the Upcoming Events section.

Again, we thank you for your outpouring of support for our teachers, staff, and entire community!

Lockdown Drill

October 16, 2019

Dear Bateman Families,

This morning, our school implemented a formal practice drill of lockdown procedures with the assistance of our local police officers, as recommended by Chicago Public Schools. While no environment is absolutely risk free, we take the safety of our students seriously at Bateman Elementary School and practice emergency procedures at least twice per year.

We are proud of the staff for their positive attitudes and calm approach to situations in keeping children safe, and of our students who followed the drill procedures as instructed. Sometimes, lockdown situations can frighten students; however, we do everything possible to keep all children calm. All teachers discussed the purpose and procedures for the drill in a developmentally appropriate conversation. Please continue to discuss the drill with your child and let us know if follow-up is needed at school.

Again, here are a few reminders to assist you when speaking to your child about the importance and purpose of lockdown drills:

  • Approach the topic of safety with a calm and even tone.

  • Be open to your child’s questions.

  • Try not to meet their questions with resistance or negativity. Be open to whatever is going on in their minds. The more knowledge and understanding of the situation they have, the more comfortable they may become with more practice.

  • Use comparisons - sometimes it is easier for children to understand the importance of the drill when they have something to compare it to. You can even compare practicing drills to wearing a helmet or seat belt. You do these things to be safe, just in case there’s an accident or your child falls off their bike. These things may never happen, but if they do, you’re protected.
  • Remind your child to listen to their teacher - be a superhero listener!

We feel that open and clear communication is important to enhance our safety efforts and wanted you to know about today’s lockdown drill. We appreciate your support as we are always seeking to create a safe environment at Bateman. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Ms. Davos and Ms. Kloepper

Lockdown Drill

October 15, 2019

Dear Bateman Families,

Our school is committed to the safety and education of all our students and our priority is to keep children safe at all times. Our procedures aim to minimize disruption to the learning environment while ensuring the safety of all students and staff. On Wednesday, October 16, 2019, we will be practicing a lockdown drill with the Chicago Police Department. This is a required school drill that all schools must implement each year.

The teacher will review the purpose with the students at a developmentally appropriate level and discuss the safety drill procedures before the drill begins. Please feel free to discuss it at home, as well, and remind your children that it is a safety drill, like a fire drill, and that they are safe.

The procedure will be the following:

●  The office staff will go on the intercom and announce “Lockdown”.

●  Teachers will lock classroom doors and close window shades.

●  Teachers will gather students silently into the corner of the room that is the furthest away from doors/windows.

●  Students will remain silent.

●  Staff and CPD will travel around the building to check for compliance in all areas of the building.

●  Classrooms will stay like this until the “All Clear” signal is announced over the intercom.

Things to keep in mind when speaking with your child(ren):

●  Approach the topic of safety with a calm and even tone.

●  Be open to your child’s questions.

●  Try not to meet their questions with resistance or negativity. Be open to whatever is going on in their minds. The more knowledge and understanding of the situation they have, the more comfortable they may become with more practice.

●  Use comparisons - sometimes it is easier for children to understand the importance of the drill when they have something to compare it to. You can even compare practicing drills to wearing a helmet or seat belt. You do these things to be safe, just in case there’s an accident or your child falls off their bike. These things may never happen, but if they do, you’re protected.

●  Remind your child to listen to their teacher - be a superhero listener!

We feel that open and clear communication is important to enhance our safety efforts and wanted you to know about this week’s lockdown drill. We appreciate your support as we are always seeking to create a safe environment at Bateman. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Ms. Davos and Ms. Kloepper
