Message from the Principal
Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

Happy Spring Break!  We're sure you've taken notice to the construction occurring on both sides of the school building.  We met with the Alderman's office prior to Spring Break to devise a plan for smooth arrival and dismissal procedures.  The Sacramento side procedures will remain the same.  For those who choose to drop off on Richmond, families will need to take Berteau Eastbound and turn RIGHT on Richmond by the playground.  The Kiss 'N Go will be stationed further down to ensure all children enter the school safely.  Please hang in there and bear with us through these significant changes.

Here's how you can help:

1.  Spread the word to your neighbors and friends so everyone is informed
2.  Volunteer to be an extra hand at the Kiss 'N Go
3.  Make sure to leave a bit earlier to help with traffic flow

Please be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to see daily updates of all the exciting things happening at Bateman!  We look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday, April 22nd at 8:05 am!

Be Empowered • Be Inclusive • Be Kind

Be Bateman!

All the best,
Georgia & Kate

Congratulations to Bateman's April Teacher of the Month!

Picture
What an honor it is to be recognized as April’s Teacher of the Month! I am truly thankful to be a part of Bateman’s family and community.

I knew since third grade that I wanted to become a teacher and have been blessed by educator role models growing up. In conjunction with amazing teachers in CPS, my dad was an educator in CPS and my grandpa was an educator in the South East Province of South Korea. I attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and received my Bachelors in Early Childhood Education with an approval in Special Education. In my first year of teaching in a CPS school in Little Village, I also received certification in English as a Second Language. There, I taught in blended monolingual and bilingual preschool classrooms as well as K-1 self-contained as a Special Education Teacher for 4.5 years. Now, I am in my second year of teaching K-2 Diverse Learners here at Bateman!

I believe every person is equipped with compassion for a certain age group, and my heart definitely is with the little ones. It is fascinating to see life from their perspective, and to take part in creating learning opportunities to cultivate their curious and creative characters. I absolutely love my teaching adventures, complete with wonderful students, staff, parents, and our community.
Apart from teaching, I love traveling with my husband, playing board games, spending time with family and friends, and giving back to the communities that have helped me become me!

Bateman Chess Team's March Madness!

4/4/2019

Picture
The Bateman Chess Team wrapped up its own March “madness” with several important events played over the course of the month.

Congratulations to the players who spent the weekend of Mar. 8-10 in Schaumburg for the K-12 High School National Championships.  Most of our players were in the Under 800 rated section, where we placed 14th out of 63 teams and brought home one of the top 20 team trophies!  That group was led by Kayin T. who finished in 21st place out of more than 300 players!  We also were represented by Andrey N. in the U1600 section with 4 points and Chris S. in the U1200 section, with 3 points.  And we even had a father/daughter team take 1st place in the combined Friends and Family section.  Congratulations Jocelyn S. and dad for your successful Saturday!

On Mar. 23, the Bateman team sent its top players to the CPS chess playoffs at Whitney Young High School.  Congratulations to the 3rd/4th grade team who finished in the top 3 in the north-side division and qualified for the City Championships!  They were led by William M., who was also the overall winner of the K-4 north-side bracket!  Although our other grade level squads just missed out on qualifying as a team (they all got 4th or 5th place), we did have some individuals that earned a spot in the Championships.  A big applause for Andrey N. (who was the overall winner of the 5th/6th grade section!), Kalen A. (K-2), and Steven U. (7th/8th gr.) for advancing to the finals.

At the City Championships on Mar. 30 back at Whitney Young, our 3rd/4th grade team got 11 total points to finish 5th overall.  The two individuals that qualified from Bateman that were able to play had an excellent performance!  In the K-2 division, Kalen A. got 3 points earning 12th place overall.  In the K-6 section, Andrey N. scored an impressive 4 points in a challenging group to earn 4th place overall.

While the big March tournaments have ended, the scholastic chess season rolls on.  Look for the Bateman Chess Team at upcoming Chicago Chess Foundation tournaments, along with a group that will travel to Nashville, TN in May for the K-6 Nationals.

Onward and upward for our Bateman Kings & Queens!
