Gracias padres! Dabble Kids Wisdom: I Remember When I Paint workshop at the Loyola University Museum of Art.2/21/2016
On Saturday, our wonderful Art teachers, Ms. Tambone and Ms. Chrisman as well as 7 parents and 16 students participated in the Dabble Kids Wisdom: I Remember When I Paint workshop at the Loyola University Museum of Art. The students toured the Utermohlen exhibit, prepared a short play to perform for residents at the Clare, a senior residence with a nationally recognized center on aging and memory loss (the play was introduced by Dr. Bryan James, who specializes in Alzheimer’s Disease at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago), and then, everyone joined together for a fun, hands-on, intergenerational art project led by School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) art therapy student Dr. Yemonja Smalls and Jean Morman Unsworth, the 91 year-old co-founder of the Chicago Children's Museum. The students and senior residents transformed tissue paper, glue, and tempera paints into self portraits--a key theme in Utermohlen’s work. The finished artwork will be displayed in the windows of Hershey’s Chocolate World, located adjacent to LUMA, right behind the famous Water Tower. It was quite an amazing day...one our students will never forget! Please see for here for the press release. On Saturday, the Bateman chess team traveled to Rickover Naval Academy for the latest Youth Chess Foundation of Chicago tournament. It was the largest event in the organization's history with over 420 students from across the city. Bateman earned 2nd place in 3 of the sections: 3rd/4th grade, 5th/6th grade, and the Advanced group. Seven different Bateman students earned individual awards for top ten finishes in their sections. Congratulations to Ivan Suarez, Luke Rosado, Chris Salas, Aaron Andino, Umair Ahmed, Jim Nguyen, and Jana Zivanovic (who got 4 wins in 5 rounds in her first competition in the Advanced section!). The team is now ready for the city playoffs and state championships next month. Big thanks to all 29 players who made it to the tournament and the many supportive parents! Bateman students participated in the Chicago Fire's Soccer in the Community Soccer Clinics on Thursday and Friday during Physical Education class. In addition to practicing soccer skills, students learned about teamwork, communication, and commitment. This week, our K-5th grade students made their parents and guardians proud! They showcased what they have learned in their classrooms. This event was dedicated to the sciences and it was entirely led by our students. Excellent job! Excelente trabajo! |
