Community Support Efforts for Neighborhood Fire

2/21/2022

Picture
Good Evening Bateman Family,

Today, a tragedy occurred in our very own backyard. At approximately 3:30 am a fire broke out in an apartment building next to Twisted Hippo which unfortunately spread to Twisted Hippo and Ultimate Ninja.  The damage was devastating and has left so many of our community members at a complete loss. While we wish we could do more at this point, we echo the outpouring of gratitude that few were injured.

While we are not sure of next steps, we know many of you want to help. It’s a heartbreaking situation since we know the business members personally and they have made valiant efforts to truly become a central part of our neighborhood. We have all spent many Fridays there, they supported our staff during the strike, and even created a beer to raise money for Bateman.

If you want to help, Go Fund me pages have been created and can be found here:
  • Twisted Hippo Go Fund Me
  • Ultimate Ninja Go Fund Me

We will be sure to update all of you regarding any additional fundraising or ways to support the families affected by the fire as we receive more information.

We need to come together and support our community now more than ever!

Warmly,

Georgia and Kate

Special Message from Bateman LSC

Dear Bateman Community Members,

It is our great pleasure to announce that on February 1, 2022, after performing and discussing the cumulative principal review pursuant to Local School Council (LSC) guidelines, the Bateman LSC proudly and unanimously voted to approve the renewal of Principal Georgia Davos-Vetas’ contract to lead our school.

As CPS principal contracts run for four-year terms, our vote renews Principal Davos-Vetas’ contract through the 2026 school year. We believe that Principal Davos’ vision and effective leadership have directly resulted in Bateman’s success within the Chicago Public Schools’ neighborhood school system.

We hope you will join us in enthusiastically thanking Principal Davos for her continued guidance, dedication and passion for our children’s education.

                                                        --------------------

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

It is such an honor to have been awarded the contract principal position for the third time at Bateman Elementary School!  Bateman is an exceptional school known for its dedication to developing compassionate, inquisitive, and goal oriented students while developing the core values of being empowered, inclusive and kind.   I plan to continue to build on these practices to ensure students continue to thrive at Bateman.  I promise to be supportive and continue to develop a collaborative culture that honors students' individuality and strengthens and empowers them to explore and take risks.

I am humbled that the Local School Council has selected me as your principal.  I look forward to the opportunity to continue serving the Bateman community.  If I can ever be of assistance, please call or email me.  It is through a collaborative learning community with consistent, honest, and open communication that I can best serve our students.

Yours truly,

Georgia Davos-Vetas

Bateman Booster Sponsor Profile
Thank you, Somethin' Sweet!

BATEMAN WEBSITE   | TRADUCIR ESTA PAGINA  |   TEACHER WEBSITES   |  CONTACT US

Somethin' Sweet Donuts has been a supporter of Bateman since they first moved to Albany Park in 2019, providing treats for events including teacher appreciation week and hosting “Dine to Donates”. This school year we welcomed them as a Gold Level sponsor of the Boosters.

We were lucky enough to sit down with Andrew, the shop’s owner, to chat about the business. Because so many Bateman teachers, parents and students are his customers he wants to give back to support them in return. We promise, If you haven’t fallen in love with them yet, you’ll certainly want to head over there after reading this! Oh, and not just for donuts, they have coffee, savory items and ice cream too!

What is the history of Somethin' Sweet?

Andrew: Our family opened Somethin’ Sweet in 2012 but my father has been baking for a very long time. He started his baking career in California in the ‘80s but moved to Chicago after marrying my mother. Since 1991 he’s been making donuts at my aunt’s and uncle’s donut shop in Batavia, IL. When they sold their business and retired, my parents decided to open our own place here in Chicago!

Several years later, we were looking to expand into Albany Park because of the close proximity to the train, lots of foot traffic, and the absence of another independent donut shop nearby. It was not only until after opening our doors that we learned how much of a hidden gem this neighborhood is. The community support, especially during Covid-19 has been amazing. People were very keen on helping us keep our doors open. For instance, coming in for a single donut and leaving a way too generous tip!

Andrew does none of the baking and focuses more on the “millennial things” as he puts it (modernizing, digital/social), but he is thrilled to be a part of the tradition and happy to not have to work for anyone else!

What are your specialities:

Andrew: We are mostly known for our cake donuts - especially the red velvet but always have flavors rotating based on the seasons and holidays. For example:

  • Fall/Winter - Pumpkin

  • Spring / Summer - Lemon

  • Valentines Day - Heart shaped

  • Birthday/Custom Donuts - where you can spell out a message with letter shaped treats

  • Fat Tuesday - Paczkis donuts

What are some things that make you unique?

Andrew:

#1 - We do not use any peanut ingredients for our donuts!

As a family run business we take great pride in our products and customer service. Somethin’ Sweet is an inclusive space - everyone is welcomed here.

We make our donuts fresh every night!

Somethin' Sweet will be around for a long time. Why? Because Andrew loves this business and his passion oozes from him, like the jelly oozes from the Jelly donuts. He loves meeting other business owners and community members, setting up fundraisers and events.

Now that you’re drooling, head over to Somethin' Sweet at 4456 N. Kedzie for your Valentines’ treats on February 14th and your Fat Tuesday Paczkis on March 1st!!

Inclement Weather Preparation
BATEMAN WEBSITE   | TRADUCIR ESTA PAGINA  |   TEACHER WEBSITES   |  CONTACT US

Tuesday, February 1, 2022

Good afternoon Bateman Families and Friends,

We hope you are staying warm and having a wonderful day so far! This afternoon, you may find that your child has brought home a school chromebook to utilize for technology purposes in the event Chicago Public Schools makes the decision to call a snow day tomorrow. While we do not know for certain if there will be a snow day or if our normal schedule will resume, we wanted to ensure that all students have access who may need a device for remote learning.

We encourage you to pay close attention to the news this evening as the inclement weather approaches. The district will notify families once a decision has been made and you should expect to hear from your child’s teacher with links and a virtual schedule should the snow day ensue.

Get those shovels ready and #BeBateman!

Warm regards,

Georgia Davos and Kate Kloepper
