Bateman Remote Learning Plan

8/31/2020

*|MC_PREVIEW_TEXT|*
BATEMAN WEBSITE   | TRADUCIR ESTA PAGINA  |   TEACHER WEBSITES   |   REMOTE LEARNING
Message from Administration

Dear Bateman Family,

Today we officially welcomed back our staff to the beginning of the new school year! While we could not greet them with our annual BBQ, it was wonderful to hear planning occurring in socially distanced hallway meetings, see supply bags receiving their final touches, and witness virtual teaching space creations! We know many have already been in contact with their new homerooms and all are eager to collaborate with each of you!

Over the past few weeks, we have put all our efforts into preparing for a successful school year. Through everything, we are so thankful for our Bateman Family! The continued collaborative efforts inspire us as we begin a very unconventional school year.

Our top priority continues to be supporting all students and their families. Thank you to each of the participants in Friday's Local School Council Meeting, where we explained in great detail regarding the plan for this year. Please take a moment to watch this video  or review the presentation slides created by the Bateman Leadership Team that further explains the Remote Learning Expectations provided by the district. It is important to note that we have adapted the guidance to fit the needs of our Bateman community. The video includes information regarding:

  • The 7 Remote Learning Expectations

  • Remote Learning Policies

  • Curriculum and Instruction, including the framework grade band schedule

  • Diverse Learner Support

  • English Learner Support

  • Social- Emotional Support

If you still have lingering questions regarding our remote start to the school year after watching the video and reviewing the Bateman FAQ for Remote Learning, please feel free to contact us at bateman@cps.edu. Please note that we are continuously adding new sections to the Bateman FAQ for Remote Learning to keep information as pertinent as possible. Please continue to check back on this document, which will be centralized within the Remote Learning section of our website. Additionally, teachers will be emailing student versions of schedules to parents  on Wednesday afternoon.

We have several exciting upcoming events. For more information about these events, please ensure you are subscribed to the Bateman Buzz!

  • Kindergarten Virtual Orientation: Tuesday, September 1st @ 10am

  • PreK Virtual Orientations: Wednesday, September 2nd @ 10am

  • Supply Pick Ups: Week of August 31st

  • First Day of School!: Tuesday, September 8th @ 8:15am

  • Virtual Curriculum Night: Wednesday, September 23rd @ 5:30pm

The flexibility and understanding of our Bateman community has been tremendous. We encourage you to stay connected to the Bateman Facebook page, Twitter and the Bateman Buzz for the latest information regarding learning models in the coming months.

We are looking forward to a wonderful 2020 school year!

Warm regards,

Georgia and Kate

Message from Administration

Dear Bateman Parents,

We hope that this email finds you all well!

We continue to put all of our efforts into preparing for this school year. We are so thankful for our Bateman Family! One of our parents said it well, “We have heard a lot on the news and reflected on what this year will not be. Let’s continue imagining what it can be!” It will not be typical. It will take time for us to figure out this innovative model of education for all of our students, but we will get through this year and educate our students to the best of our abilities.

Please make sure you read through the district's Final Reopening Framework that provides information for remote learning for the 2020-21 school year.

Together, we will face challenges in the year ahead of us. We will learn and grow together as we provide education that looks different but exhibits the same care and commitment that defines us. In this unusual time, we will be at our best when we continue to stand together. Our kids will follow our lead, and they will also demonstrate their resiliency. We are all in this together, and we will all get through this together.

We look forward to seeing you from afar in the several upcoming Back to School Events, both virtual and socially distanced.

Sincerely,

Georgia and Kate

CPS Remote Learning Guidance Release

Dear Bateman Families and Friends,

Throughout the past week alone, we have had the pleasure of connecting with our entire staff, over 300 of our families in varying virtual events, and countless more via email, enrollment and forms. We have shared our commitments to our children, welcomed new families, answered questions and much more. Ultimately, we have supported one another and have created several open lines of communication. It is through this communication that we will continue to build trust and solidify partnerships across our school community.

We stand by our commitment of constant and transparent communication. Earlier this evening, Chicago Public Schools released the official guidance for At Home Learning this fall. Please keep in mind that this new guidance has several details that are new to us all. We have been reflecting and brainstorming with our staff to enhance our practices from the spring and are eager to put our new ideas into practice.

We are confident that our team will develop a robust plan that fits the needs of our school community. We had intended to share our draft plan with you tomorrow morning at our Local School Council meeting and will unfortunately be unable to do so having just learned new information this evening. This has a great impact on our school community — one that impacts students, teachers, and families alike — and deserves time, collaboration, thoughtfulness, and multiple perspectives. We encourage you to join us at our rescheduled August LSC meeting, which will be announced at the beginning of next week, to provide feedback on our draft learning plan.

We cannot thank you enough for your continued outreach, support and excitement for the upcoming school year. We know that together, we will continue to #BeBateman in the best possible way!

Please see below for details from the district and do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Warm regards,

Georgia & Kate

Dear CPS Families,
Earlier this month, we announced that all Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students will begin the coming school year learning at home. Throughout our response to COVID-19, our top priority has been, and will continue to be, keeping our students and school communities safe. Today, we are sharing our Final Reopening Framework for the start of the 2020–21 school year. This framework gives CPS the flexibility to begin the school year learning at home and transition to hybrid learning once our public health experts determine it is safe to do so.
Mirroring a Normal School Day at Home
When students start school on September 8, their day-to-day experience will look very different than it did during remote learning last spring. We are using the insight we gained last year to provide our educators with new resources, tools, and expectations to ensure students continue to receive a high-quality education.
Families should expect an experience that mirrors what students what students would normally experience at school. Teachers will take attendance daily, use Google Suite tools to post work and host live instruction, and be available during school hours to provide students with feedback, support, and host parent conferences as needed. This will help teachers better understand individual student learning and provide support in a timely manner.
Students in kindergarten through grade 12 will engage in live, real-time instruction with their teachers for at least three hours per day, with high school students participating in live instruction for 80 percent of the school day. The remainder of the school day will be made up of independent learning and small group activities with other students through Google Education Suite. These changes will help provide critical structure in an age-appropriate manner and keep children engaged for the entirety of each school day. Expect to receive details of your child's schedule in the coming weeks.
Implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 Plans
CPS will continue to ensure that our diverse learners make progress on their IEP goals and the general education curriculum. IEP teams will determine how to meet the individual needs of students with disabilities from home in a safe, supportive manner. Educators and related service providers will provide live, real-time instruction as well as individual check-ins and independent learning activities.
Providing Real-time Instruction for English Learners
Bilingual education teachers will continue collaborating with classroom teachers to deliver instruction that meets the language needs of our English learners (ELs). In order to support students’ language development, ELs will receive live, real-time instruction and independent learning activities this fall.
Educating the Whole Child
We know children may experience a combination of stress, fear, and anxiety as the school year approaches, and easing these feelings and building supportive learning environments will be critical to their success this coming school year. This year, we will offer additional mental health interventions and supports, introduce grief curriculum, expand small group trauma interventions, and provide virtual classroom-based activities for managing stress and anxiety. We will continue to be intentional about prioritizing social-emotional learning and sharing mental health resources with students and families throughout the year. Parents can contact their school social worker or counselor to request more information about these services or resources.
Expanding Equitable Access to Technology and High-Speed Internet
To ensure every CPS student will have a high-quality digital experience learning at home this fall, CPS will provide 36,000 computing devices to children who still need one––in addition to the 128,000 devices distributed last spring. And through Chicago Connected, more than 100,000 families from limited-income backgrounds will be able to get high-speed internet at no cost. Families can check their eligibility and access their activation code by simply entering their child’s student ID number and birthdate into our eligibility tool at Chicago Connected. You can find your child’s student ID on their report or progress report. If you need assistance, please call your child’s school.
In the coming days, we will be releasing additional resources for parents and students that will help our families prepare for learning at home during this first quarter. We will also begin introducing new virtual training sessions through our Parent Universities to help our families transition to online learning in addition to the courses available on the Office of Family and Community Engagement's YouTube channel.
We thank you for your continued patience and engagement and look forward to providing your children with the high-quality education they deserve while keeping everyone healthy and safe.
Sincerely,
Janice K. Jackson, EdD            LaTanya D. McDade

Atentamente,
