Sexual Misconduct and Title IX Student Training
OPT OUT FORM DUE
Tomorrow, Friday, April 30th

Dear Family, Parents/Caregivers and Guardians,

With an ever changing education landscape, the safety of our Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students continues to be of the utmost importance.  Earlier this year, our staff completed compliance training “Protecting Chicago’s Children”. These training sessions further ensure our staff remain vigilant about addressing any issues that could compromise the health and safety of your students.  The next phase of the Office of Student Protection and Title IX’s commitment to this endeavor is providing training on preventing and reporting abuse to all K-12 CPS students.

The Office of Student Protection and Title IX (OSP) Sexual Misconduct and Title IX Student Training covers the following 5 learning objectives in developmentally appropriate language:

  1. Students will understand CPS Title IX Policy and Discrimination Statement

  2. Students will know who the Title IX Coordinator is, what OSP does, and how to get in touch with OSP

  3. Students will understand what constitutes sexual harassment

  4. Students will be aware of the resources available to students who report sexual harassment or retaliation, including interim measures pending an investigation

  5. Students will know what to do if they believe they or other students have been subjected to sexual harassment

As a district OSP has collaborated across a number of departments to create developmentally appropriate sessions that will allow students to identify abuse and empower them to report any wrong doing that may have occurred. The sessions have been broken down by PreK-3rd Grade, 4th-8th Grade, and 9th-12th Grade and are all around 30-45 minutes. This training will occur at Bateman for all PreK-8th grade students on Wednesday, May 5th.

Parents have the right to opt-out of the Office of Student Protection and Title IX Student Training. If you choose to opt your child out please return the Bateman OPT-OUT FORM by Friday, April 30th.

If you wish to teach your child this material yourself, you can access the videos to the sessions on the OSP website at www.cps.edu/osp.

Sincerely,

Georgia Davos-Vetas

Queridos Familia, Padres/Madres/Cuidadores/Guardianes,

Atentamente,

Georgia Davos Vetas

Message from Administration

Dear Bateman Friends and Families,

Congratulations on a successful Report Card Pick-Up day and for thriving during the first week back for Quarter 4!  We are grateful for the many parents who made appointments to engage in informative conversations about their child(ren)’s educational progress. We are also incredibly proud of our entire community for your adaptability and resilience in implementing yet another schedule for 4th Quarter. We recognize that this has been a major shift that has impacted start times, lunch times, and more to accommodate the nearly 400 students we have in the building on a daily basis. In an effort of continuous reflection and improvement, please indicate how your child’s first week of Quarter 4 went by completing this survey by Friday, April 30th.

Finally, as we strive to foster an antiracist, inclusive environment at Bateman and in light of the Derek Chauvin trial, we would like to provide you with some resources and tools that we shared with our teachers and staff last week to support difficult but important conversations with our children. We know so many of our teachers have been providing students a safe space to ask questions, form their own thoughts, and share their feelings and have kept social justice at the forefront of all of our units of study themes year round. Please feel free to utilize any of the following resources to continue the conversation at home with your child.

Tools our Teachers Utilize:

  • Learning for Justice: Toolkit for Talking About Racism

  • Facing History & Ourselves:

    • Accountability, Justice, & Healing after Chauvin Trial

    • Race in US History Lesson Tools

Book ideas to foster discussions with read alouds:

  • Race Conscious Children's Books

  • Conscious Kid Book Lists

  • Our Skin: A First Conversation About Race (First Conversations)

  • Something Happened in our Town

  • Embrace Race Book List

  • The Brown Bookshelf: 28 Days Later Books

Our best,

Georgia & Kate

Reopening Updates
We will continue to update our community with information and FAQs.
Newly added items will be included in this section of the Buzz.

What if I missed the Hybrid Family Meeting on Wednesday, April 7th?
We completely understand that many families have varying schedules. In order to accommodate all who are planning to return, we have included the presentation and video below. Please make sure to view both for all in person information.

What steps would I take if I want to switch the learning model for my child?
The window for Quarter 4 In-Person Learning has closed. Thank you for all who have submitted the survey. Those who have submitted "Hybrid Learning" for Quarter 4 have the ability to change to "Learn at Home"; however, all families who have indicated Learn At Home will remain with Remote Learning for the remainder of this school year.

How do I access the Social Compact agreement for families who are returning?
All parents and students should sign and return (either electronically or printed version) of the Bateman Social Compact [Parent Compact English & Spanish | Student Compact English & Spanish]

How do I know when and where to go for arrival and dismissal?
As our numbers have increased for Quarter 4, it is imperative that all families follow the arrival and dismissal procedures. Please make sure that you are at the correct door at the correct time!

What steps are necessary to receive the Health Screener text or email?
Parents and guardians of In-Person learners are required to complete a daily health screener for each child attending school. CPS sends a text message or email to the primary contact for each child around 6:00 am. The screener must be completed the morning of attendance no later than 7:30am. To verify that parents or guardians receive the daily reminder, ensure that you have "opted in" to receive district notifications in the North Office by phone at 773-534-5055 or email Ms. Rivera. If you have been receiving the emails to parents with updates regarding reopening, you're all set!

COVID Case Procedures
If a staff member or student tests positive for COVID the first important step to take is to report the case to the
COVID-19 self-reporting tool. The Office of Student Health & Wellness will then determine who was exposed (close contact for more than 15 mins) and who needs to quarantine. If a staff member tests positive as part of the CPS on-site COVID-19 testing then the pods exposed will be required to quarantine and launch in to remote learning.

Click below for tools to guide you through the process, should the need arise:

Sexual Misconduct and Title IX Student Training

For questions about course content, please submit them here, and the OSP Training Team will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you for making CPS a safe place to learn for our students.

Sincerely,

Georgia Davos-Vetas

Atentamente,

Georgia Davos Vetas

Message from Administration

Dear Bateman Friends and Families,

Could you hear the laughter and learning buzzing from the school? We sure hope so! We successfully welcomed a new wave of students today and our entire staff community was elated to see our students continuing to thrive together - no matter where they are learning!

As we reflect on the day, we would like to share a few ways all in person families can help ensure all are able to have a safe and positive day:

  • Follow the procedures! Please keep in mind that all procedures were developed to keep everyone safe. Please help your child follow the procedures at entry and dismissal, including the correct time and location. See the maps below to help follow the procedures. Please help us by waiting until your designated time!

    • PK -4 arrival is 8:05 - 8:15 am

    • 5th - 8th grade arrival is 8:20 - 8:30am.

  • Complete the Health Screener Daily! A big thank you to those in person families who completed the health screener prior to 7:30 this morning. ALL students must have a completed health screener before they enter the building. If you do not receive a text, please visit cps.edu/healthscreener and please utilize the tutorials for assistance.

We quickly had to (yet again!) pivot a bit when they rain came into play this afternoon just in time for recess to begin. Our students were so understanding of indoor recess, listened carefully to the changes, and had fun playing games in their classroom or the cafeteria. Cross your fingers that the snow prediction for tomorrow stays clear of Chicago so our friends can all go outside!

Looking forward to a wonderful final quarter of the year with each of our wonderful Bateman family members!
