The Bateman Chess Team wrapped up its own March “madness” with several important events played over the course of the month. Congratulations to the players who spent the weekend of Mar. 8-10 in Schaumburg for the K-12 High School National Championships. Most of our players were in the Under 800 rated section, where we placed 14th out of 63 teams and brought home one of the top 20 team trophies! That group was led by Kayin T. who finished in 21st place out of more than 300 players! We also were represented by Andrey N. in the U1600 section with 4 points and Chris S. in the U1200 section, with 3 points. And we even had a father/daughter team take 1st place in the combined Friends and Family section. Congratulations Jocelyn S. and dad for your successful Saturday! On Mar. 23, the Bateman team sent its top players to the CPS chess playoffs at Whitney Young High School. Congratulations to the 3rd/4th grade team who finished in the top 3 in the north-side division and qualified for the City Championships! They were led by William M., who was also the overall winner of the K-4 north-side bracket! Although our other grade level squads just missed out on qualifying as a team (they all got 4th or 5th place), we did have some individuals that earned a spot in the Championships. A big applause for Andrey N. (who was the overall winner of the 5th/6th grade section!), Kalen A. (K-2), and Steven U. (7th/8th gr.) for advancing to the finals. At the City Championships on Mar. 30 back at Whitney Young, our 3rd/4th grade team got 11 total points to finish 5th overall. The two individuals that qualified from Bateman that were able to play had an excellent performance! In the K-2 division, Kalen A. got 3 points earning 12th place overall. In the K-6 section, Andrey N. scored an impressive 4 points in a challenging group to earn 4th place overall. While the big March tournaments have ended, the scholastic chess season rolls on. Look for the Bateman Chess Team at upcoming Chicago Chess Foundation tournaments, along with a group that will travel to Nashville, TN in May for the K-6 Nationals. Onward and upward for our Bateman Kings & Queens!
