On Saturday, March 17, the Bateman Chess Team traveled to Whitney Young High School to compete in this year's CPS North-side Playoffs. In a very competitive field, three out of four Bateman squads placed in the top three and earned a spot in the City Championships this Saturday, March 24 (also at Whitney Young). In the Kindergarten-2nd grade division, Bateman was led by 1st grader Gabriel Jael, who had a perfect 5-0 score. The 5th/6th grade group got another flawless performance by 5th grader Andrey Novikov, the individual champion in the section. And the 7th/8th grade team grabbed the 3rd place spot with help from 7th graders Kevin Cordoba and Chris Salas, whose four wins apiece, earned 5th and 6th place respectively. Bateman was the top neighborhood school in all three categories. Congratulations to all contributing players! Now on to the Championships...
